Anyone know where to buy Suet from??? Found some frozen in Canadian Superstore but they said it is only seasonal and now have none left...cant do without dumplings :)

Sobeys sell it here in Ontario, my wife buys it often.

I was it in Sobeys 2 weeks ago (in the frozen meat section). Fingers crossed you will find some.

I went a couple of days ago to get some to make mince pies and it had all gone. I asked and they said they had been re-ordering every day but were told there was currently none available.

I have seen it suggested that you can freeze shortening and then grate it as a substitue. I liked that idea as soya oil sounds more healthy than suet, so I tried it. The shortening didn't seem to easily freeze (I only froze it overnight) and it was still pretty soft and messy to grate). I have made mincemeat with it though, but have yet to bake the pies so will let you know how well it works.

We make dumplings without suet. I cant tell the difference.

I sometimes take a steak and kidney pudding to pot luck suppers here in Canada. Every last crumb and drop gets scoffed down with remarks like "Wow, is that ever good. What's in it?" When I tell them what's in it they almost gag. Canadians only use suet as bird food, with rare exception. That's why it is seasonal - one exception is in Christmas puddings.

Funny as was having a conversation only today about suet with a Canadian friend. I don't use it in my mince pies but I like the occasional steamed suet pudding. She told me Co-Op does it too. Just wish you could buy the packs of Atora veg suet over here. If it's the veg one, can we bring it over from the UK?

mmm...cant see why it cant be brought over from the uk...dont understand why they dont sell things like Atora here. I will have to give my son a list when he comes over from uk ;)

It can't be brought in from the U.K. because it's a meat product. It's a strict no-no because of mad cow and other concerns. Don't even think about bringing it in. I find you can get suet reasonably easily in the major supermarkets here (Nova Scotia).
