Oh, yes, that's very much the case here (at a competing firm) as well. There isn't much of a culture of actually taking holidays so people retire and then get paid for months. Some retire, get vacation pay for months and come back under contract anyway.

In February I go up to 5 weeks, plus I get 11 flex day, plus 5 Xmas days, and then all the public holidays. See, that's why I stay.

Blimey! Where do you work? I'm moving to Calgary from bc in November - husband has a new job. I'm going to be looking for work - I'm a corporate communications manager - my choices are really corporate headquarters and government jobs - wondering which would be better.

Be part of the self selecting group of educated middle class Brits emigrating at a point in their careers where their age/experience can command a premium.

I do apologies if I'm wrong , but I thought you was a teenager and not old enough to work full time in Canada ?

Believe me, in the industry I work in taking my full allocation is very hard

I can't recall an instance of going to someone to get a problem fixed and finding they were Canadian.

 Best thing I've heard since I've come here

I work in unionized municipal government. Vacation is as follows:

10 days after you have worked one year i.e. basically no vacation days for the first year!
15 days per year after you have worked two years.
20 days after you have worked eight years.
etc, etc.

No sick pay until after you have worked 6 months. When you do get sick pay its only 90% of salary. This ensures that people who are sick come into the office and spread their germs around because they don't want their pay docked by 10% :sneaky:

The 'norm' is for people to work a little extra time each day for every third Friday off. I have compressed mine a bit more for a 9 day fortnight so that helps a bit.

The plus side is pension (only if you are 'permanent' or have stayed for two years - a load of positions are 1 or 2 year contract). Benefits are fairly average and salary is on a set scale and better for some professions, not so good for others.

That is now it's been everywhere I have worked, but its also the provincial minimum, but never had a job that allowed vacation until after 12 months.

The rest are pretty good benefits, I'd love to even have the sick pay even if its only 90%, at all the jobs I have had, if your sick you get paid 0% of your salary, so if I got 90%, I'd not go in sick like I do now..

Sounds like awesome benefits to me personally.
