Stingy Vacation Time.

Canada is a wonderful contry. But why do Canadian employers not give people any time off to enjoy and explore it?

The law is 2 weeks paid vacation a year for full time workers (I think).
I get three weeks after 5 years service, next jump is four weeks after 10 years service. Then at 17 years service I will get my 5 weeks back, that I had after just 4 years service in the UK.

So you get lots of time off when you are old and the kids are grown up!!

That sucks!
Just sayin'

According to CNBC, you should move to Europe. Are you eligible to live or work in Europe or the UK?

If it's paid vacation that is the goal of your existence then Canada is probably the wrong place for u unless you is a teacher in BC, self employed or work from home packing didgits for eBay orders.

Companies want to maximize the use of their employees, they don't want to pay them to have time off exploring the country.

If time off is something one desires. North America isn't the place to be.

Generally yes, but I heard this week of someone who's been in the job a couple of years and is taking a whole year off and being paid for it. If not working is the priority then you need to be not working for the Feds.

Come on Britmini! This is Canada! The joyous existence one lives here means every days a holiday...who needs vacation!

Yes it can be a bit rubbish.

Vacation time here sucks big time. Besides the bloody awful climate, that's the second biggest reason for me to move away from here. Doesn't give me any time to make trips home once or twice a year and maybe go on a vacation once a year. Living in the UK would. :)

Whenever we have vacation threads on here people seem to generally have between 4 and 6 weeks even though 2 weeks is apparently the standard.

I can firmly say, I fall into the 2 week crowd, never been able to wiggle more time out of any company over what the law requires.

So didn't all these who came over here with a job offer not bother checking what the vacation time was etc.
Sure those on the IEC won't know until they apply for a job but if arranged employment then surely that question should have been asked.
Canada & the USA are not the EU. If vacation time is important then don't move here.
Why quit a job in the UK with good vacation time?
Next you will be moaning about the price of cheese or cell phone plans or the lack of Robinsons squash and mushy peas.

I agree. As an employee I had 5 weeks vacation from day one here. As self-employed I have substantially more.

Can you take extra vacation weeks unpaid or do employers not go for that?

I can take as much unpaid leave as I like. I do get two weeks paid though.

Varies by employer, some are more flexible then others. I had one company who would let you take as much pre-approved time off as you wanted if it didn't affect operations but it was a 400 person call center so very rarely did they deny a request.

But my last employer was a small company so limited staff, and would not approve anything beyond what was required by employment standards.

There is no consistent policy for time off beyond what the provincial law requires, for every person that gets 4-5 weeks off, there will be someone who gets the minimum off.
