Default Standard of living question

In an attempt to help "Dying to leave England" lets reduce this to short mathematical answers and a simple yes/no.

So lets apply this formula:

Canadian salary divided by British salary (ie if you have $60k divided by GBP35k you would put 1.71 - note we dont want to see the details of your salary only the summary).

Then answer the question : Is your standard of living higher in Canada than in the UK? Yes or no please.

Lets keep it short and sweet.

Good idea, in addition can we keep it factual? not based on what you believe, your opinion or third party hearsay

Materially, yes.

Culturally, no.

But living in Calgary I would say:

Financially slightly better. Should be much better longer term once the initial higher expenses for things for new imigrants fall off.

Quality of living immeasurably better

Me - 1.0

Wife - 0.5 (But swapped full-time for part-time, and works as a "soccer/swimming" Mom for the rest of the time)

Investment income - 2.2 (Cashed out of the UK property market)

Overall - 1.23

Financially - Yes

From a "family oriented, less stressful, healthy outdoor type" quality of life perspective - A resounding YES

No.

Quality of life is far less for me because I value travelling around - something you can't do from Calgary without spending a small fortune on expensive flights.

Interesting one.

If I compare what I'm making in dollars now with what I was earning in pounds when I left in 2000, it's about 1.9. If I compare with what I estimate I'd be making if I were still in the UK job, it's about 1.6.

As it is, my salary now is in pounds and paid to me in dollars. It was advertised in the UK at the pound rate. Thus, my rating is approximately whatever the current exchange rate is.

I am currently sitting in a nice area of Gatineau, looking at the first signs of the fall colours, in a three bed detached house I could not afford to buy in the south of England.

Cowtown - great thread - I take back all I thought about you - LOL

This is what I should have asked before - but was too thick to think off !!

Many thanks to all that replied - the answers are pretty much what I expected, ie, even though salaries may be lower (relatively) in Canada the lifestyle is much better

I think that this is a really interesting thread and so far it hasn't come up but you should include a proviso that the comparison be recent.

Let me take it to the extreme. I left in 1963 at the age of 16. I was working in the UK at that time and earned three pound ten a week or 182 pounds per year.

Now if I take the current salary for the profession that I recently retired from that would be approximately $80,000 per year not including overtime.

So using the formula mine comes to 439.6. I'd say I was doing just a little better.

Even if I take the salary I earned when I arrived in Canada the calculation still comes out to 11.4. So I do believe I am better off here.

Thanks for indulging me.
Steve

A much greater standard of living than in the UK and I am not talking just about all those material toys either. We opt not to have that many.
Our lives are alot more peaceful and we delight in bringing our children up in our beautiful surroundings. Canada has been our home for the last 10yrs and has offered us a life style that we could not have gained in the UK.
What she lacks in culture and heritage our Canada more than makes up for in her environment.
My best advice to desperately to leave Uk' is, do it ..never give up. There are some wonderful opportunity's awaiting you

2.2

higher standard of living? Oh yeah . Had to have two earners at about the same salary to have a decent life in the UK, now we can easily live on the one income, our house is twice as big, still have two cars, an 8 minute commute, and many more options to make use of the big outdoors.

No complaints in New Brunswick (well apart from the lack of driving ability of New Brunswickers which makes you thank your lucky stars you survived those 8 minutes on the road!!)
