Speeding Fine
 

So i just got my first speeding fine I was doing 74 in a 50 zone! gonna cost me a $115. Im not sure of the system over here will i get any points will this impact my insurance?

If it's just a photo no, but yes if you were stopped by police (I think:blink:)

Doh!!! What a stupid question, The whole point of fining is to stop irrisponsible drivers. Insurance companies will rightfully load those idiots that drive that way.

My last ticket (1990) was for I think 81 km/h in a 50 km/h but the officer knocked it down to 64 in a 50. He was an ex-pat and I was late to get to a pub to watch England/Cameroon and I told the officer that. I think the fine was about $40 or so and I think by being less than 15 over I didn't lose points.

There may be some other posters on this forum who have had more fines and some may have had to even attend drive education classes.

I'm still surprised I never got any speed camera fines from the last time I was in the UK, although I have heard that cars that are from a car hire are exempt from fines as it is too hard for the car hire place to recoup the money. Could be one of those urban myths.

So i found some info on the Ontario MOT site:-

3 points for exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h

4 points for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h

6 points for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h or more

Looks like Im on the 3 points! just wonder how much that will impact my insurance for next year and how long the point last for!

I think it is. They have your credit card details on file and can just charge the fine to this.

Just after I arrived I was stopped doing 101kms/h in an 80kms/h zone. I still wasn't used to how low the speed limits are - even on a major highway. The cop gave me a ticket for up to 20 kms/h over the limit which is the lowest fine. At the time it was 2 points on my license (it's 3 now) which was a relief because in BC if you accumulate 3 or more penalty points in a year your insurance goes up.

I guess it pays to hold your hands up and apologize rather than trying to argue.

Definitely a myth. I work for an Accident Management company, one of our major clients is Europcar. We hired a car for one of our clients, he got done by a speed camera for a lousy 8 mph. The ticket went to Europcar, who passed our details to the police. We in turn had to pass on the client details.

The hire company normally take credit card details. I'm not even sure you can rent without one. I've sure never been able to when I've travelled to Canada. I've always been advised that any traffic violations would be charged to my credit card.

So....one way or another they do get you.

When I worked in HR I had a Hungarian Pharmacist who didn't have a clue about driving on English roads, he hired a car to drive from Plymouth to Bristol to pick up his girlfriend and on the following Monday called me to tell me English roads are crazy and he kept thinking he saw lights flash at him...he was hit with a really hefty fine and the rental place called to tell him then charged it to his credit card.

Most definitley Urban Myth. It is actually stated in the rental agreement (that everyone signs but never reads!) that any fines/tickets incured whilest you have rented the car will be charged to your card once the rental company gets notification.

I must have just been lucky then...my kids were convinced I had blown through some of the areas where the cameras were at a high speed......

I gather based on replies that it is an urban myth.

I've been reeducated twice. Such nice people in those classes, all people who drive a lot, of course.

A collegue just got a ticket for 138 in an 80. He's decided to fight it and I'll be interested to see how he gets on. The general reaction has been "well, I drive along there at 120, everyone does". This is, of course, beyond the tantrum threshold (50 over in ON) but he's not been impounded.
