Smile Special schools in canada (moved from Meet and Greet)

Hi There,

Hubby and I are thinking about moving to canada in the next couple of years- we have an Autistic child. Does anyone know anything about the education system and whether or not it would be difficult to get into the country because of our son.How much are medical bills for a family of four?
Lots of questions!!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Rachael

Hi and welcome

Sadly there have been tales on here about people having problems getting in due to their child's needs. I am sure that someone more better informed will be able to give you detail. You should post this question on the immigration forum rather than the meet and greet as this is where the experts tend to hang out.

Good luck, Lynn

dbd33 will no doubt be along in due course and can give you a fair summary, and potentially blunt view of schools, treatments, specialists and costs .... or PM him

Hi, a teacher here:
Every province in Canada has its own centralised education system (i.e. a Ministry of Education) There is no "Canadian Education System" (like the UK National Curriculum system). I recommend you contact the MOEd. in the province(s) you are interested in moving to. Unfortunately, Alberta and Sask and Newfoundland have the weakest (politely stated) support systems for special needs children (they often require large $$ input from the family).

Ontario min. of ed. : www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/index.html
Quebec: www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/gr-pub/m_englis.htm
BC: www.gov.bc.ca/bced/
Alberta: http://education.alberta.ca/

Bonne chance!

I don't think a family including an autistic person could qualify to emigrate to Canada. Autism is a permanent and expensive condition and is exactly the sort of thing the medical requirements are designed to exclude. FWIW, previous discussions suggest that, depending on province and location within the province, the provisions for autism are probably better in the UK.
