What's that?

Re: Son has lost PR card

He needs to report it stolen or missing and apply for a new one and keep the record of application.

He can travel to the US on his normal passport. Returning he has two options -

1) go to the Canadian Embassy in Florida and obtain a temporary travel document - you can read up on it here: http://bit.ly/1fCl5cM

2) fly back using his passport, carry a copy of his COPR and tell them he is waiting for a new PR card as his was lost/stolen and show them the application acknowledgement.

He can't be refused entry to Canada, though they may give him a hard time.

Yup .. What they said .. I went to LA before I got my card. I printed out something from somewhere showing that Brits dint actually HAVE to have their PR card. No issues on airline . Sent to secondary by CBSA on return to YVR.
Lady in Secondary looked at my stuff and says "huh, why did he send you in here, off you go !"

Lazy cow she should have run you in FOSS then gave you the gears for travelling by a commercial carrier without a PR card:lol:

From the CIC website
The permanent resident card (PR card) is the official proof that you are a permanent resident of Canada. You use this wallet-sized plastic card to show you can enter and stay in Canada when you return from another country.

You must show this card when you re-enter Canada on a commercial vehicle, such as an airplane, boat, train or bus. If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your car, there are other documents you can use.

Odd . I had another piece saying as a visa waiver country we didn't have to show it ?! Maybe changed .. Was 4 years ago?

Interesting.
The Permanent Resident Card is the proof of status document for permanent residents re-entering Canada on a commercial carrier (airplane, boat, train or bus).

If you are a permanent resident of Canada and are travelling outside the country without the appropriate documentation to prove your status in Canada, you will need to obtain a travel document to demonstrate to representatives of a transportation company that you are entitled to re-enter Canada as a permanent resident.

1. That might be fun, since there is no Canadian embassy in Florida, the only offices that process TDs are Los Angeles and New York

Apologies PMM. I didn't bother checking whether there was an office in Florida as I thought that the OP could check that herself from the link I gave. I mentioned Florida only because that is where she said he was going.

Sigh.
