The Question:

I hope someone could help me with the following questions with regards to the points given in the education category.

I have a 3 yr university degree in Manufacturing Engineering , a 4 year apprenticeship in aircraft engineering and 18 yrs of study (11 at school, 4 for the apprenticeship and 3 for the degree).

My question is, what option do i pick from the list? The options seems to be either the 2 year degree and 14yrs study, giving 20 points, or, the 3 yr diploma and 15 yrs study giving 22 points.

Also, can anyone tell me why you get more points for the 3 yr diploma (e.g. Higher National Diploma) when it is a lower qualfication in the UK than a 3 yr degree?

I hate to state the obvious....but.....why wouldn';t you choose the one that gives you the most points????

To get many replies, you have to post under "Canada Immigration" on this board, and not under "LIfestyle & Culture"

Obviously i will pick the one with the most points if that is the right one to pick, but i'm not sure because i have an apprenticeship and a degree, not an apprenticeship and a diploma as stated in the option for 22 points. Any ideas?

I really do think the options (particularly for education) should be explained a bit better. I 've read so many questions relating to education in the forum. It seems few people understand what canadian immigration are asing for.

I haven't seen the latest immigration forms, when I did mine 5 years ago, it asked for education university level for 10 points. If the apprenticeship gives you the same points, hence your dilemma, go with the degree. It is considered higher here in terms of education. As for why a diploma may be considered equal, it depends on the current skills immigration Canada want to fill. The topic of only highly qualified immigrants being allowed into Canada raises it's head on a fairly regular basis. Either way, Canada has consistently failed to reach it's immigration quota for the past 5 years, so if you have sufficient points, with a degree, English speaking, under 45???, a few bob in the bank??? and a clean police record???, you should have no problem. BTW A degree doesn't guarentee a job when you get here, experience is what the employers are after!
