Some Q's about immigrating through nursing
Hi there,
My family and i are wanting to get started on the road to Canada. I understand that as dh is a nurse we can take a different route other than applying as skilled workers and waiting..and waiting...!!! From reading on these forums i understand that we can register with the Board of nursing for our prospective Province (B.C.) and then get out there on a Temporary Work nursing permit. Then once out there he can do the CBNE (?) exam within 3-9 months or something??
Can anyone clarify this, and tell me how i go about starting this process, and the steps i need to take?? Many thanks
Clair

PR. I am a qualified nurse and would also be interested to know if it is possible to do on a different route, we are using agents and they have not suggested this to us so far. Will keep u posted if i find out any info. We have thought about living in Canda for many years and began getting appliation together about a year now, it is a long haul but if we get through will be worth it.

There is a lots of ifs and buts which will be specific to your circumstances and the area you are interested in. But generally, yes you can beat the normal skilled class by contacting the nursing registering board of that particular province, register, and then contact employers for jobs and ask them if they are willing to through the process of gaining a work permit for you. You must then pass the exam, but can start working in the meantime, the time limit for the exam is around 9 months of commencing employment if memory is correct. I'm unsure if you have limitations on your practice if you are waiting for CRNE accreditation.
Obviously you are trying to gain employment against other people and have to sell yourself in the usual way. Some may say to go in with the exam already undertaken will improve your chances. You must have a canadian style CV. Some hospitals will only grant casual work to begin with too to begin with. Their employment laws are a lot less strict, I know someone who found employment sold up and moved out, only to be let go when her unit ran out of money. A real problem when her permit is job specific which meant she had to leave Canada, losing a lot of money and has submitted her skilled class application.

You should consider applying for permanent residency at the same time if you want to live in Canada permanently - work permits are time restrictive. You may also wish to use a specialist immigration consulatant. My wife has used Nurses4Canada the advice and assistance given has been invaluable. Good Luck

Contrary to much rumour on here, nurses can work on temporary work permit as MOH was offered a place under the same route.
For more general info search my other previous posts under the search titles of Healthmatch BC, nursing etc using the search function above.
