hi, Welcome to the forum
My OH and I have just come back from a recce trip to NS and we were looking at 4 bedroom houses with living room/dining room/basement in approx 1 acre plots for around the 230/260,000 dollar mark. These were approx 25 minutes drive form halifax. Obviously the closer to the town, the more expensive, as with anywhere....
I am currently trying to register as a nurse in NS. Not as easy as I thought. The first thing your wife needs to do, is contact the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) They require a list of things in order to grant you eligibilty to register in the province. I forget the exact list, but roughly, it is copy of birth certificate, ref. from current employer, Marriage certificate, proof of registration in uk. (NMC need to provide this, think it was about £30 and hasto come direct from them) The hardest thing I had to provide was a transcript of my training. The school of nursing I trained at does not exist any longer, so the NMC had to make a transcript up. I waited 2 months for them to do this, and then when it finally arrived, the CRNS said it was insufficient evidence. They need a breakdown of the actual hours of theory and practice you did... in great detail. I am now on the waiting list to do a 5 day course in NS to prove my knowledge.. then of course having done this, I have to sit the Canadian Nursing exam within a year of arriving(no way round this am afraid) Whew.... quite a list, and quite time consuming.
Considering they claim to have such a shortage of nurses, there are certainly enough hoops to jump through before you succeed. I wish you the best of luck.
As it turned out with us, my OH,who is NOT on 'the list' managed to get a job offer before me, so we are now in the process of selling our house and getting TWP organised. I will have to wait till I arrive there to sit my course and keep fingers crossed I will pass! It is not the way round we thought it would work out at all.
Sorry this is a bit long winded... I was surprised myself at how much was needed.
Feel free to ask if you have any more questions......

hey nice advice.
Out of interest what job did your husband get? I am toying with the idea of either re-training so I can get a job out there. I do not want to go there and work from home again... OR to carry on as I am. Leaning towards first option.
But what?
What made you move to N.S.? We are going out there soon to have a look. It's the least I can do.

Not to "piss on anyones bonfire", but there was a poster a while back, whos name I forget now, with much the same plan as you. A senior ICU nurse as I recall.
However, as they looked into the requalification issues they basically got disillusioned about the practicality of the whole thing, I think they just moved to a less frenetic part of the UK? Where abouts are you now...you dont say?

We kind of fell upon nova Scotia by accident.... My OH started emailing companies, just to 'test the water' from one side of Canada to the other. Out of all the resumes and emails he sent (about 50 ish) he only got 3 replies and 2 were from Companies in halifax NS and one in NB. So our mind was really made up for us by where the work was available. I do realise that we have been extremely fortunate, just luck and good timing that his skills were needed. The architecture companies have not really been hit by the recession... I know it's very different in other businesses though.
We had never been there before our recent trip, and luckily, we loved it.
Def. go out and have a look. I know it is not for everyone, but good luck with whatever you decide.

We decided it was better to go, than never know. The biggest con for us is leaving friends behind, the rest of it is just one big adventure. Several of our friends have emigrated in the last two years, and so far they are all getting on really well and we still keep in touch / visit when we can. The biggest pull for us is lifestyle - we enjoy a rural life, but can't afford a small holding here (not and still be close to hospitals for A&E work). We grow our own veggies and would like to expand that. I would like to be a stay at home mum for a bit, but we need both full time wages to live here so thats not an option. We would be richer in pocket and hopefully in soul by moving - but we won't know that for sure unless we try.
Spending a few weeks in NS made up our minds... it made us both smile

Hey, we are hoping to move out late spring/early summer providing the paperwork happens at that speed! We are going to take enough to live on for the first year, as neither hubby nor I have a solid job offer yet (although we are going out for another couple of weeks recce to chase that up).

Hi Lady lockett... what A/E are you looking at?? I also am an A/E nurse/practitioner. Holding out for a job in Halifax infirmary... plenty advertised. Met a couple of Doctors on placement at my work who said it's a really pleasant place to work. Was thinking of staffing there for a while till re qualified then move out to community, as I believe there are no Nurse Practitioners in the A/E hospital setting.... lots of walk in clinics etc though. Maybe we will bump into you. We are moving around Easter...

We are hoping for the new Colchester County Hospital in Truro, as they are building a spangly new diagnostic imaging suite and getting PACs updated - all of which hubby will love.... however it is still being built (hence no solid job offer!) and probably won't be done til 2011. We also liked the look of Bridgewater - lovely town, lot of gorgeous rural communities, and a good sized hospital. Halifax is our other option of course, but it would mean a slightly longer commute as we would still want acreage and couldn't afford a huge plot so close to the hospitals. Hubby likes to be 20 mins, max 30, from an A&E to be on hand for emergency calls etc.
Maybe we will meet up

Are you on the BE facebook - if so I will say howdy when I am on.

Hi,
guys I am both excited and also down. Why? Because I have finally decided to give this dream of mine a go. I talked to my wife aboutt he situation Monday/Tuesday/Wednesdy and she agrees it is worth at least looking into seriously.
I have wanted to move the Nova Scotia for 10 years on and off. One year I am going to do it then next I give it up as a silly dream.
What changed? Having a child. We only live in small attached cottage. Worth £150,000 (£60 K equity) but we barely have a garden. It's cramped as heck. The houses I want with hiuge gardens are way out of my league. Not only that I am tired of sitting in traffic jam after traffic jam just trying to go for a hike in some woods. It's only going to get worse. UK hs some great areas and is stil la great country to live in on a grand scale but as I am nearly 40 it's kind of now or never.
Now for the past 10 years I have been wokring from home making good money Interent marketing. I make about £26K p.a. Not a fortune but I get to work from home in my own hours etc. It's about as stable as any job or self employed person can be these days.
My wife is an I.C.U. nurse at a big hospital here. I am told she would get a decnt job in Canada no problem and I can do what I have been doing.
On the face of it does it sound doable? Why do I feel I am pipe dreaming? Some questions:
1) I have about £60k equity in the house. And about £40k in life savings..that's it. So I need some kind of savings as back up say £20k. If I was to put £70K Can$125,000 deposit 42% on a house and I would be looking at spending max. of $300,000 Can$ on a house in N.S. would this buy a good house? doesn't have to be huge. Big garden, nice area.?
2) Would my wife get a job ok? I do not think that's as easy as people make out any more. What qualifications does she need to pass for Canada and how long doe sthat take?
3) If she did get a job could I kind of tag along with her?
4) How long does it take to get visas etc? I have heard anything from 4 years to 6 months?
5) Is there an age limit of getting in?
6) Roughly and I realize this is very rough what kind of costs are you talknig about to move over? £10k, £15K+ £5K :-)
OK that's about it for now....I wish I felt more confident about this. It gets harder the older you get and the more responsibiltiy you acquire. I would have jumped at this opportunity 10 years ago and single

I know this might not be of much help in your situation, but when I get frustrated and angry, I call my nan up and we go for a bike ride.
