Skunk

I had my first experience with a Skunk today. It was roaming around inside my garage as I'd left the door open for a few minutes. As soon as I saw it I kept my distance and watched it go off in the direction of the crawl space at the back of the house. So I guess that means we have a tenant or two that I wasn't aware of!

So what's the deal here? Is it live and let live? Are they likely to be a problem in the future living so close? I've no idea of what to expect except to keep a respectable distance. Any advice or info appreciated please.

Call one of the local companies such as critter control to have the skunk removed or it will set up housekeeping under your house and have all sorts of kits which have a tendency to spray everything that moves when they are young.

I had the same experience a few years ago. I had a family of em living under my garage floor. I got a critter control outfit to catch them and turn them loose up the road. Someone took one as a pet after having its scent gland removed. Apparently they make very affectionate pets and you won't have a problem with prowlers. Unfortunately, once descented they have no defense if they return to the wild.

Welcome to Canada Eh!

A friend had a family burrow under their sunroom, and she used fox pee (bought at a hunting supply place) to leave a predatory smell that persuaded the skunks to seek alternate accomodation. Failing that use a professional company,or perhaps the township animal control people could recommend someone if they wont do it themselves. Dont want to startle them while trying to move them on...the skunks may leave...but the aroma will linger on.

Cant let them stay there because when they have babies every little thing will set the mother off, and it will really make your eyes water.

Once they are gone get the chicken wire out and seal off anywhere they may try and move back into. Or get an aggressive dog and a lot of dog shampoo:)

Should read: Get an aggressive dog with brains. My wolf cross got sprayed by something - vet said a skunk - when the utterly stupid hound chased it into the woods by my house, presumably for a play date. It took nearly a year to get rid of that smell. That stink makes your eyes peel...never mind water.... :scared:

The secret to getting rid of skunk odor is to bathe your dog in tomato juice. I know this sounds very weird but it works. Our dogs were always getting sprayed.

You're totally right, Dawn, tomato juice - and a lot of it - is the only way to get rid of the odour on dogs. My dogs have spent a lot of happy hours in the tub whilst I spend a small fortune at Safeway!

I looked up Skunk online last night and came across a site that claimed tomato juice just fools a person into thinking that the smell has gone.

"Bathing an animal in tomato juice seems to work because at high doses of skunk spray the human nose quits smelling the odor (olfactory fatigue). When this happens, the odor of tomato juice can easily be detected. A person suffering olfactory fatigue to skunk spray will swear that the skunk odor is gone and was neutralized by the tomato juice. Another person coming on the scene at this point will readily confirm that the skunk spray has not been neutralized by the tomato juice."

Anyway I don't know if there's any truth to that but I know my mother-in-law swears by tomato juice and I hope to never have to put it to the test! :)

Even weirder... feminine douches work too! You just use the product like a dog shampoo (you don't give your dog a douche -- apologies for that imagery :D). Some pet supply shops stock it on the shelves.

They did the whole "removing skunk smell" on Myth Busters on the Discovery chanel about a month ago..

Tomato juice was considerd plausible but not proven, but they did come up with a list of things that did work abit.... (Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid dish soap)

I'd google "Myth busters skunk" and dig through the list to find out more
