Re: IT Skilled workers
hi, I am a sergeant in the royal signals in the british army looking to move to the toronto area after completing my 22 yrs service in 2014. I am a comms systems engineer, qualified upto HND standard hoping to be qualified in CCNP and Prince 2 by the time i leave and looking for a job in IT/Networking in the Toronto area. any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. I still have 6 years to tune my quals to the canadian market so any advice on what would be better received by employers would be great thanks.
Having read through some of the posts in this thread i have realised i dont have any valid reason for wanting toronto other than my uncle living there and a s a good soldier i am always prepared to move just about anywhere within reason if it means a better quality of life for my family. so if anyone can help with good areas, quals needed etc for a comms sytsems engineer i would be very greatful with any advice given. nick |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Hi there I'm fairly new to this posting lark.
My OH has about 23 years experience in Oracle DBA and Middleware, and we were wondering if there is any call for this in Canada. If so where, and is it a required skill? Any advice would be much appreciated. Elaine:) |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Both roles (PM systems engineer and Oracle DBA) would have a demand in almost any city in Canada. One of the key growth area at the moment in Canada is healthcare related development / integration projects so any of the systems integrators will look at people with any Healthcare experience on their resume. I know it is totally irrelevant because technology experience is the key for these roles, it is easy for them to place people with experience in the end user environment.
I would answer questions like "What are you coming for", "What do you want to achieve with the move"? Answer these questions they will help decide, Big city, small city etc then review the provinces for the type of environment you want (by the sea etc...) For me it was a change in lifestyle and to slow the pace of life. After working in central London for 14 years I wanted a complete contrast. Hence I chose Fredericton New Brunswick. City of about 50-60,000 with most of the amenities you would want and a great attitude to work life balance:thumbsup: |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Hello Everyone,
I got my Spousal Open Work Permit last week. Does anyone know of any IT company looking to hire a PMI certified Project Manager with over 12 years experience? I will appreciate if they can put me in touch or I can pm my resume. Thanks in advance. |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Interesting thread, seems that staying away from the big cities isn't necessarily a bad idea which is pretty much the opposite of here.
Anyone over on Vancouver Island with any good IT contacts? I'm a presales/PM/support type person, plenty of experience, BSc etc. and (currently) only a British CV available. Thanks in advance, Paul. |
Re: IT Skilled workers
I am currently just getting to the end of my first year, in the Skilled Workers Visa. We were really looking to move to the kitchener/waterloo area, but we would happily move elsewhere.
Is there any IT professionals out there who moved to the kitchener/waterloo area who could advise on recruitment within this area?? |

Re: IT Skilled workers
Anyone having an idea how job opportunities in the IT-sector are when visiting Canada on a WHP (Working Holiday) Visa for one year? (Not resisting of course when I can get an offer to stay longer :p )
I am a 25 years from the Netherlands, having a BSc in Software Engineering and around 2 years of work experience working for a Financial institution (writing small software applications, maintaining the financial software system, giving support to end-users etc...). I am planning to land in Vancouver and look for work in the Vancouver or Kamloops area. |

Re: IT Skilled workers
Hi all,
I hope it is ok to post on this thread. I am hoping someone can offer some advice, suggestions or something as to where to go for job opportunities. Have tried the links in other posts and have sent PM's but nothing so far so thought I would put a career overview on here and see what turns up. We are keen to get to Canada and have applied for PR but don't want to wait the expected 3 years to get our application looked at (I know everyone is in the same boat but I also know we need other people to help us make this a reality :) ). So anyways, here is a brief career overview. I look forward reading what people have to say. Feijoa :) I am 42 years old and initially come from a Telecommunications background. I moved into 'pure' IT delivery, then into Project Management for three years, and then moved into consultancy for a large corporate within NZ. I have telecommunications qualifications, a Bachelors degree in Business Studies (the Canadian equivalent is a business management degree), am MSCE certified, SANS GSEC certified, CISSP certified, have covered Level one ITIL (and now also Level two), and have intermediate qualifications in Project Management. I have also successfully navigated three Management papers with the NZ Institute of Management. Because I have a background in both IT and telecommunications, I am able to lead a team who have a wide range of skills and specialties, as I do now. I guess ideally a management role would be my aim, but if this is no-go, then I have had much success as a consultant or project manager. I and currently work for the NZ Govt agency tasked with making sure our Govt agencies adhere to sound ICT security practices and principles, along with investigation of 'serious' electronic attack, providing Intelligence support to NZ military and diplomatic missions, and ensuring the ongoing integrity of highly classified computer systems. I have been in my current role of Unit Manager for three years, where I am responsible for two teams, each consisting of seven specialists. One team produces and promulgates NZ national ICT security policies, in line with accepted global standards. This team also audits classified systems to ensure they meet the required standards. This work is based on CISSP and ISO 27000 standards and guidelines, along with 'enhanced' requirements for the classified and military environments. The other team attempts to 'break down' popularly used software and operating systems, engages in 'blue' team and 'red' team exercises on behalf of Government clients, actively seeks (via honeynets etc) new and known aggressive attacks and attackers. the information they garner is disseminated within the NZ Government and to 'partner' countries (including Canada), on a 'need to know' basis. |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Hi folks,
My wife & I will be arriving in Canada in just over a month on a TWP, all being well. I have managed an inter-company transfer, working for a well known IT services company (its not IBM!). I have to say the main hub for banking, for example, is Toronto, where I will be based. Toronto the home of a lot of the larger companies that you will be used to working for, and I belive offers the most possibilities in this line of work. I am not familiar with whats available to Vancouver but the little I know does not suggest that IT is a big sector there. Anyhow I'm a townie - who wants all that nature stuff ! :p Cheers, Mr B. |

Re: IT Skilled workers
Hi there,
I have been following this thread since it started and found it really interesting. I can see that the demand for pure IT staff is high all over Canada but my background is more in marketing database. So as you would have guessed does anyone know if there is a demand for people having experience both in marketing and managing databases? I have roughly 10 years experience in working with databases in a marketing environment. I started within a marketing database department for a catalogue company that used to be based up north and I am now working in a direct marketing agency for blue chip clients (bank, retailers). My role is a mix of marketing and database administration. I work with MS SQL (2000 and 2005) doing database design, implementation and administration. I do a lot of programming SQL, T-SQL, SSIS... I also work with MS Access, Excel (doing VB programming), Business Object and different mapping software. Marketing wise I do campaign analysis, selection, reports... I checked some of the websites quoted in the different posts but there are not many jobs advertised (at least in marketing database roles). If it's like the UK the demand exists but as job seekers find a new position quickly companies don't really advertise. Do you know if it's the case in Canada? I am a quick learner and if needed I am ready to move forward a DBA role. Any one who can help or comment is welcome. By the way both my wife and I speak English and French (fluently). Ideally we are looking to relocate in the Atlantic Provinces (Moncton being our preferred choice). |
Re: IT Skilled workers
We are looking for a move to Kamloops, and found it very easy to find, my husband has been in the it field for around 21 years and is currently a virtualisation architect. We have been on the skilled worker list (permanent residents) for nearly a year, but have not looked for work direct with employers. What do yo suggest we do? My husband is 44 and I am 38. We are both studying at the moment for our BSc with the open university, but Husband already has a diploma. Husband is doing a BSc in Maths and computing, and I am studying BSc in Life Sciences. Any suggestions to get us to Kamloops quicker?

if so what areas are you looking at? There are several IT based companies here in Kamloops that are really struggling to fill IT Skills posts. We are not looking fr fresh graduates - The local University provides lots of them, but the 10-15 year working in the field skills are in great shortage. Our company has had a 10-15 year seasoned senior programmer post available for nearly a year, we are also looking for an experienced networking person. When I talk to Directors of other companies I hear the same thing - both Windows / ASP.Net and Linux / PHP skills. We will be working on raising the profile of this City because either you guys aint coming over this way or you are not finding our city. |

Being fluently bi-lingual means you should easily find some sort of work here in NB. |

My husband has 24 years experience in IT with C and UNIX skills, Sql oracle or sybase. Any advice greatly received thanks

Re: IT Skilled workers
Hello, sorry if this is going to be too much information to plough through. Basically when my OH was looking for IT employment, we set up a number of job alerts. All the following are job websites that we found catering for IT. Unfortunately they do not seem to have one overall search site like Jobserve UK/USA/Australia. The closest seemed to be Indeed which covered a numbered of jobs. He is an Oracle DBA and part of the requirements he needed for a TWP was Oracle DBA certification - it's not the be all and end all of getting over here but it certainly helps.

Hi Airseir,
As discussed here is my husband's CV. If anyone knows how to do attachments within PMs then that would be good to know :D Maybe you should edit your message to take out your address and phone number details from the CV - people can do all sorts of dodgy things these days nicking id! Good luck with the job hunting  |
Re: IT Skilled workers
Yes, have removed it now. Unfortunately the techie skills have all migrated to my husband, so I couldn't figure out how to attach it to my PM :o
Thanks! |

I've been looking around for some time now, trying to find a job that would suit my skills. Over 15 years in the industry as senior management with a wide skill base, and yet it's increasingly difficult to find companies that offer genuine opportuities to International applicants. Great news to find there are people out there that are still keen!

I don't know if other communities are the same as Kamloops - but I do know that a lot of Employers here do not advertise much (not just the IT community). They seem to have a preference for word of mouth and personal recommendations from their network of contacts. This City really is a networking City. My intention is to enable people from the outside to be able to get their resume's circulated withing the network. I have recently been working with the Interior Science council and local Ecconomic development board and we have set up the Interior Technology Industry Association with the intention of improving the ecconomic development of the interior High Tech industry with one of the aims being to increase the flow of experinced professionals. We should in the near future be developing a Web site dedicated to circulating and collecting appropriate resumes.
Soooo.... the point I'm making is I think your idea is a very good one and I hope it works. (Why say something with one word when you can use lots !) |
Re: IT Skilled workers
hi there :)
I'm coming over to Canada next week for 16 days travelling from Vancouver to Calgary, via Kamloops, Jasper and Banff. Essentially its a trip to get a taste of Canada before we start the migration process. I've been working on It for over 5 years now for Lloyds TSB, during that time I've worked in front line 24/7 operations and now 24/7 application support/development. I've supported the Wintel environment, Unix AIX environment and the applications running on them. I'm looking for some advice to how I should put myself forward with regards to applying for IT work out there. |

I am an IT professional and have been through the skilled worker route to get into Canada. I'm now running my own IT business in Calgary. If any of you IT guys want to get in touch I might be able to give you some pointers etc. plus we are always on the look out for good people....... and by the way, its worth the wait! The plan is if we like it we start the ball rolling and apply to move there, (at this time Vancouver and Calgary are our favourite options) I would be looking to carry on my development in IT, having over the last 5 years moved from frontline 24/7 operations of a number of platforms (Wintel, Unix and SNA Networks) to application support/development of the Corporate Payments Portal application for Lloyds TSB. Is there any help you can give with regards to tailoring my resume towards the expectations for IT jobs in Canada? |

Re: IT Skilled workers
Hmmmmm, looks like I've stumbled across the thread a bit too late but if you don't ask, you don't get.
I've been to BC several times on holiday (gonna be back in December for a few weeks) and would love the opportunity to live and work over there. Very briefly, I'm 31, from London and have been working in the Network/Security game for over six years. I've worked at several very high profile companies in the city and am Cisco certified. Trouble is, I don't have a degree, which I fear may hold me back a tad. Is there a fairly healthy job market for Cisco/Checkpoint type work? Cheers, Matt |
