Bit of an odd one this..... How is Canada in terms of large size shoes? I'm talking UK size 13 - not even sure what size that would be in Canada, do they use US sizes (which would be size 15?)?

I have nightmare finding shoes over here - pretty much the only place I can get them is Brantano, anywhere else on the high street looks at me like I'm a freak (maybe I am ) when I ask for 13's!

My husband wears size 13 UK (size 15 Canada) shoes, and finds there is a LOT more choice here. He's still more limited in terms of styles than someone who wears an 11, but there are a number of places that sell them. He gets a lot at Payless or Shoe Company.

13 are the equivalent of 13.5 in Canada, actually the size I wear. They are available, but usually only sold in full sizes after 13.

Is that conversion table right? I thought the US equivalent for 13 was 15 as cov-canuck says..... I've a pair of size 13 Nike trainers too and I thought I saw US size 15 in those too....

In terms of choice in large sizes, I guess an incursion across the border would probably help? I vary rarely shop for them anyway - mainly because it's such a pain in doing so!

We saw lots of larger sizes in Winners (a bit like TK Maxx) and cheap as well.

All the coversion tables we found seemed to contradict each other, but that one seems accurate. My husband is a UK 11 and he usually wears a Canadian 12, but sometimes they're a bit big and he needs to go for an 11.5 (which is what the conversion site says he should be wearing.)

There seems to be some differences between dress shoes and running shoes (trainers).

I wear a 7 in a dress shoe but in trainers I wear an 8 or even a 9 with some brands.

I guess the moral of the story here is to try them on before buying! Which is why it's gamble to try and buy them online!

I am size 4 in the UK but size 6 here (shoes).

I am size 10/12 in UK but am size 6 here (clothes)

On the few occasions I have bought shoes in Canada I have gone up about 2 or 3 numbers (UK 5 to Canadian 7-8) There doesn't appear to be much consistency across brands.

Plus, to add to the confusion, I have to be careful whether I'm buying men's or women's trainers, as I'm a UK6 and just used to buy sz6 in whatever style I liked, but now I'm Canadian women's sz 8.5 or 9, or a mens 6(ish!)

Does anyone know if there is a difference with kids shoes sizes? I bought the kids some Clarks Shoes when I was over (it was such a relief to get them properly measured) but now I am wondering if the kids sizes are the same Canada/UK

I am now working in a shoe shop. (Heaven!) We sell ladies only and ladies are 2 sizes larger here so size 6 UK would be an 8 here. Kids are the same but men's sizes are measured differently and I can't comment on those. I do know they are not equivelant to ladies size.

Last time I had my kid fitted for UK Clarks he was a 7, and when I had him measured here (shoe store, non-Clarks) he was a Canadian 10. If Ellsie says kids sizing is the same, then that's rather worrying!

I agree it varies hugely across brands, but the John Lewis kids fitters always tell you the same about StartRite/Clarks - if you're a 7 in one, you need a 7.5 in the other, or something like that. So it's not just Canada. I ignore my shoe size and just try them on, I have Canadian 8s, 9s and 9.5s in the closet that all fit.

What I find most annoying is trousers and jeans... I'm 5ft 8, not exactly short, and to get trousers that don't scrape across the floor, get filthy in puddles and fray on the concrete, I need to buy *petite* sizes! What's that about?! Canadian women I know aren't exactly Amazonian in stature, why I am petite at 5ft 8 What do genuinely petite people do?
