No such thing as average cost. Depends how much you're taking, how you are shipping it, if you are taking out insurance, the destination etc. etc. You would get a much more accurate idea by contacting a few shipping companies, based on the volume you are sending.

As already said, it depends on volume and where to, but we filled a 20ft container with contents of a 4 bed house (North Wales to Edmonton) and it came to about 3800 GBP plus insurance with Robinsons. The insurance can seriously bump up the price, so it depends on the cover you want. Hope that gives you a good idea. By the way, Robinsons were very good!

We will be shipping the contents of our 4 bed house in a 20ft container, have been quoted between £4,100 - £7000 by differnt companies, we got in three to quote and will go with Whites as they seemed to be able to change to meet our requirements. We are going Kent to Vancouver Island
Gives you an idea though.

Hey stay away from Removal Group.Com........who promise the earth, they wrecked our furniture and almost everything we shipped over to Canada .... because they didn't wrap properly
And we paid them about £5500 to do this

We got quotes in the 4-5k GBP range for a 20 ft container from Newcastle to Calgary.
Insurance can be a significant extra sum. 3% of insured value ie 300 GBP to cover 10,000 GBP value.
No VAT on shipping costs.

When we moved to BC, we were quoted 6,500pounds all in from UK to Vancouver. If we took them up on it we'd have still been responsible for in-country delivery from Van to Kelowna (couple $grand maybe?). All things considered - we did the maths - 6500 to 7000 pounds was just over $12000 at the time. So, we sold everything or gave it away to family and close friends, raised 2,500pounds and added that to the 6500 we didn't spend on shipping... gave us about $20,000 extra to play with when we got here.
We fully furnised the new house with new (and better quality) furniture, new beds all round, new kids' furniture, kitchen table, dining set, Leather suite, bookshelves etc.... that lot cost us just under $12,000 and we were able to use the additional $8,000 saved to buy our first wreck of a car and made some other much needed purchases (42" plasma, baby!) new stereo, computer, all the bells and whistles.
three months later we met a couple fresh in from UK, who just got their (shipped from UK) furniture - three items broken beyond repair, all looked sooo old and decrepit that they were thinking of buying new (!). The insurance company that was used by the shipping agent refused to payout and the folks had to buy new anyway. They paid 5000pounds to get their stuff shipped, delayed in transit and broken on receipt, only to then spend $10,000 to rekit the new place they moved into. All that money, for all that grief and they still had to fork out.
My personal belief - it's never worth the possible grief, and the wife had so much fun choosing our new stuff and spending the savings on all the other stuff we'd have never been able to afford if we paid to ship the old stuff over.
YOU PAYS YER MONEY - YOU TAKES YER CHANCE!
I believe we did the right thing - Good luck with your decision, I'm sure it'll be right for you.

I think everyone will have different experiences on this, we used PSS who were fab nothing broken, great service, efficient, kept us informed, great Canadain agent this side, £3000 all in uk to Halifax, we had familiar things around us and I think we would personally have struggled to replace the entire contents of our house for £3000.
p.s this was 20ft sole use container
