Default Shipping smaller amounts

Hey guys,

Having been provisionally accepted onto the IEC and with our PR app also moving along, we are starting to finally think about how to get from A-B!

My question is this- when we move we will only be taking a handful of things. Mainly a few boxes of books, a couple of boxes of odds and ends and our beautiful bed (which comes in pieces). We own very little else of value so are trying to work out the best way of doing it. The books are heavy and the bed is roomy. Anyone shipped similar amounts who could give me an idea of cost? All I seem to be able to pull up is estimates for full homes.

Any tips for this would be great as well.

You have a number of things to consider. How quick do you want to see these goods? The route of transport will greatly depend on that question.

You can send items via air or sea....

Air will be quicker and you can do door to door service or door to airport service. Search for Transglobal express on google as they will give you some prices for the air....they are normally better than going direct to couriers like DHL. They will also be able to tell you what is the maximum size you can send....as I think the bed might be an issue.

Another route via air, is dependant on who you fly with when you land. Air Transat offer a very cost effective cargo service. Meaning the goods fly on the same plane and are available an hour or two after you land (provided you then clear the goods through customs)

The ship route can be cost effective and you can rent a container or ask for group haulage (for those that can not fill a complete container). The group haulage timescales are normally 12 - 16 weeks. The main issue here is what will you do whislt you dont have these items.

Brilliant, thanks! I think we will probably look into group share for shipping as we can live without our bed for a while and maybe fly the essentials! Its hard to know what to do as we are going out on the 1yr IEC whilst waiting for PR so might will probably wait for PR confirmation before doing anything.

We did exactly that, a mixture of Air and Ship....we also paid a little extra (£50 each) for Club Class on Air Transat as it got us an extra luggage allowance (the unknown benefit was the club class service & food was amazing).

We furnished our house with the minimum of stuff to live.....my suggestion is Kijiji.ca as you can get some very good quality stuff on there. Also makes a budget stretch a bit furter.

The price is about right, we did 36 boxes just over double but had to wait the full 16 weeks
