Shipping mattresses (???)
#1
Hi all,
I am sure I saw a thread on here advising not to ship mattresses - I thought I had seen that this might be due to health reasons (erm, guess it depends on what nasties have been seeping through to the matress - urk!).
Anyway, I mentioned this to our shippers and they had never heard of such and said they always shipped beds, mattresses, duvets etc to US and Canada. They thought perhaps someone had the wrong idea and due to North American mattresses/beds being a different size, it was advice based on this info.
Well as we are shipping our European-sized bed bed and figured as our mattress is a good new one we would ship it over with us.
Anyone have any other stories about mattresses (oor err missus this is going to open up sopme interesting tales)...
Cheers,
Rich.

Hi Rich,
I have just had 2 companies in to give me quotes to move from Gloucestershire to Vancouver. They were Allied Pickfords and GB Liners.
Neither of them mentioned a problem with shipping mattresses.
I have heard before (somewhere) that you are not supposed to.
I assume that there is a Canadian Customs site out there somewhere that tells you what you can and cannot ship. I will have a search later when I have some more time...unless anyone can save me the time?

Hi-
Would be interested in their quotes - we have a quote of around around £4k (inc tax) to ship 600 cubic feet to Vancouver, included with bonded agent in Canada. Shipped door-to-door and packed/unpacked/debris removal. Liability is 3% of value. Also they do customs documents and organise all transit port to port.
Cheers,
Rich.

GB Liners quote was £3000, 650 cu ft, door to door, Canada agent MI Group
Allied Pickfords was £3400, 700 cu ft, door to door, Allied Pickfords in Canada.
Insurance was 3.25% for both I think.
The volumes were their estimates, based on a house visit.
GB Liners was an exclusive container, Allied P was shared, but with other AP customers (?). They assured me that this would cause no problems like our stuff being delayed due to someone else's contents. Not too convinced.
I think GB Liners are south England only, whereas AP are nationwide.

Tim,
Just had email confirmation from them, 530 cubic feet shipped to Van was £2400 with liability at 3% of value. Shared container but no problems with delays as each shipper (customer) had goods seperately identified. Bonded agent at Canada end so guess we will go with them as rate is good and liked their spiel. Also one month free storage at UK end prior to shipping.
Cheers for exchange of info,
Rich.

I had my bed and mattress shipped this summer. Never occurred to me that it would be an issue. Also had my sofa bed shipped.

Someone I used to work with and who was off to Oz told me not to ship mattresses as according to her (though she was the original voice of gloom!!) they ship them on their sides so by the time it gets to you its out of shape. As mine is an Ikea bed and an odd measurement I had to bring it. It was in transit for 4 months and it came to me without any problems atall. It wasnt cleaned or anything, just taken off my bed and wrapped. I wouldnt worry about it.
