Re: Shipping dog question
When we shipped our Lab. he came on the same flight as us (I believe it is always that way) and we collected him at a section of the baggage hall. It was clearly marked something like Large Items. It was where folk got their prams and basically anything other than a case. It was right in the baggage hall, no driving required.
When we left Glasgow he was taken from us and put in his crate and we collected him in Toronto for an over night before going through the same process all over again to Vancouver.
He was VERY shaken in Toronto, but seemed to have the hang of it by Vancouver. So I would suggest getting all your luggage and being thoroughly sorted out before you collect him. Then be ready to give him lots of comfort and reassurance once you do get him. There is a small area outside the main door where there is a tiny garden and he may be in urgent need of that!
Our vet suggested NOT sedating the animals as they can vomit en route and ......well, the outcome is not good.
I hope all goes well for you, it is rather a harrowing business putting themin the hold. My husband said it was like puttting one of the kids there!
But you will be glad you did in the long run as they are so much part of the family you can't leave them behind.
Good luck.

I am arranging flights Manchester to Toronto (Canadian Affair)- pet shipping will sort out everything here, inc crate. He tells me however he cannot organise Toronto to Winnipeg which we would be flying with Air Canada.
I do know that the old girl will have to be cargo as her plus crate will be to heavy. It looks straight forward for us to organise this. I was a little concerned however that we cannot book it until 30 days before with Air Canada Cargo.
Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Did the rest ourselves with help from our vets who were great - they had someone who specialised in pet passports etc. and she contacted DEFRA / sorted out the paperwork, and they didn't seem to make any charge

Did you use a pet shipper or organise it all yourself?? Was it straightforward flying Toronto to Vancouver? is it just the same flying within Canada??

Re: Shipping dog question
He rang me the other day and was going to speak to a contact in Toronto. He thought it could work but may involve Annie being collected by another pet agent in Toronto keeping her overnight and sticking her on the Air Canada flight to Winnipeg. I would be really concerned about her staying overnight in a kennel (she has only every done this twice in her life) however the alternative of a 14 hour drive from the airport calgary to winnipeg or Toronto to Winnipeg isnt ideal either.
It is a shame there is not a direct flight for us!
I will let you know if I get anywhere. The chap from Petsaway has a very good reputation and his rates seem reasonable as well.

Where in Manitoba are you heading for - we are going to a farm near Virden (on Highway 1)

Re: Shipping dog question
Yeah I m pretty sure thats who I have been speaking to. I have been looking at Air Canada and from what I understand I can book my dog direct onto an AC flight without an agent. We also thought about doing the drive from Calgary (we ve done it before and not actually that bad), but couldnt really get an any answers re one way car hire. We thought Calgary as it was an easier airport to negotiate and felt Toronto was too big and sort of unfriendly compared to Calgary which seems much smaller and the staff are always so helpful - which counts for a lot when I m sure I ll be stressed wanting my dog as quickly as possible to see that he is OK!
