Hello all, I'm a Uk guy who is marrying his Canadian Fiancee ( who will then
sponsor me) in a couple of months. I'm not yet in Canada but want to send
my personal effects to her home address.
I have four 25kg boxes with books, cd's and magazines to send ( with Fedex)
but am now a tad worried that they may get stopped at Customs in Canada
because I'm not yet a Canadian citizen . My intentions are completely
honorable, I've been engaged for over a year and just want to send over my
things before I land.

Any help is much appreciated

actually , thinking about it logically, it's probably best I get a relative or friend
to send them over there after I'm married. Has anyone been in this situation before
that has any advice ?

I am in the same boat.......It is quite expensive to ship your stuff over. I decided to pay the extra to fly with a good airline which allowed 2 x32kg bags and then filled them with all my valuable stuff that couldn't be replaced (i.e. photo's). All my books/CD's etc.. are getting shipped direct with Parcel Force (although I need to double check the rates as it was a while ago I looked).

im not sending anything with parcel force. I sent a box with my wifes birthday
presents in it from me, me parents and grandparents and some cards, not a heavy box
only around 2Kg. I sent it with their parcel force world wide international standard
delivery. says from 5 working days eta 2 weeks. well over a month later and it still
hasnt arrived and no one has a clue where it is. and that cost damned £26. Im gnona
send my stuff like Nick said in 25Kg FedEx boxes cos i believe they are better value
and have full tracking and tracing and it hink that costs a lot more with parcel
force (or parcel farce as someone called them). just an idea.

Your packages will not "get stopped", however Canada Customs and Revenue Agency
("CCRA") will [most likely] impose customs dues as well as federal and provincial
taxes (just like for any package with a value of over $20 CAD.)

When you take your personal stuff with you on a flight, on arrival you have to show
the proof that you are "landing", and with some paperwork those customs fees and
taxes are waived. CCRA has no way to know that if you are just sending your stiff by
Fedex (or any other courier).

You should probably "land" first and then contact CCRA and inquire about proper
procedures for importing your belongings by mail.
