Hi my husband is as it says on the tin a self employed carpet fitter (well carpets, woodfloor, ceramic tiles ect...) he specialises in boarders (fancy flooring like what you might get in hotels where a different coloured carpet is fitted around the edges of the room or moteef in the middle) he has been acarpet fitter for 13 years , but he doest hold any certificates. He has trained and now employs 2 fitters ,and we hope to some day get our own shop and get my husband off his knees before they crumble away(he's 31 and already has what resemble camels knees ).Firstly does Canada need carpet fitters esp ones that would be looking to train and employ? and what certificates will he need to obtain? We know this is a lengthy process and to be honest we probably wont even be applying for a few years yet as iv only just started work (been home raising our brood) and unless Canada is in desperate demand for evening housekeepers then i guess im going to have to get myself trained and qualified as a nurse, which i was planning on doing now our youngest is almost 5 ,luckily i work at Bupa and have been offered a place as a health care assistant to begin with which i know isnt anyway near what i need to be to get into Canada but its a foot in the right direction and i will get some hands on experience aswell as being on the relivent courses. we arent in a massive rush but it would be nice to get there within the next 10years

Yes Canada uses carpet fitters, do they have a shortage? I would say he would get work in Calgary with no problem at all.
Now for actually getting here............. Nurses are in demand..............However if you search the forum you will find that it isnt exactly a doddle to get ANY qualifications recognised over here..............Having said that mrs wiggs is on her way over as a nurse on a work permit and Morwenna has been assessed (and passed) as a physio following a period (I think 12 months) of working covering a mat leave.
Cutting to the chase IF you can afford it (Hubby could POSSIBLY earn 50-70k) It is possible to come over on a student visa for you (so you would actually have Canadian Nursing qualification) and Hubby can have an open working permit-allowing him to work in any field (except health and childcare).
The alternative is come on a Business visa (cost prohibitive for most people) OR PNP (the province 'sponsors' you if you have an occupation that is in short supply).

It will probably be different in each province of Canada with regard to recognition of your husband's experience, but here is a link to some information for the "Floorcovering Installer" profession in Alberta.

If you haven't done so already then try to visit Canada a few times and explore the areas where you think you might like to live. While you are there you can also do some research and ask around regarding career prspects for you both. It may be possible, for example, to use one of the "quicker" processes to get to Canada such as temporary workers or provincial nominee programmes, if you find there is a particular shortage in your jobs.
For imiigration stuff go straight to the horses mouth to start with at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html
I am sure that others on the board will be able to answer specific questions better than me.
Best of luck!

Wow thankyou both for the speedy replies,im pleasd to read carpet fitters can get work we will have to look into which areas are in demand.Iv been ticking things over in my head whilst cooking/helping with home work and dreaming of a new life in Canada, now if i were to try the student route how would i go about it?(remember im starting from scratch, having only got GCSE's) dont worry i will be doing as much research as possible for myself but it would be great if some one would point me in the right direction. As im no longer 19 with no commitments how would being a student work with me having 3 children ,i mean will having a 13,11 and 4 yr old affect my chances of getting onto any courses? Apart from nursing what other skills are in demand, have i got any other options? sorry for all the questions but im so new to this i have absolutley shed loads to ask, every spare 5 minutes i get im on here going through old threads
i feel like im trying to get something that isnt with in reach because i dont have qualifications apart from GCSE's but i am more than willing to study and get what i need under my belt regardless of how long it takes ,i wish i was in the position as most people on here are with the right qualifications and well on the way filling out forms ect.... the thing is my husband and i did things the wrong way round, had kids, bought a house then got married if we had waited to have children i would have stayed at college ect.... and possibley would have been on my way filling out the forms by now,oh well such as life aye.
