Is anybody of you guys self employed in Canada?

Can anybody post a short guide regarding the steps one would have to take, regarding registering your business and setting everything up?

However if one is wanting to set up a business and has to ask this question or has trouble with Google, the other question should be if they have the acumen for self employment.

Ohh Me-oww! Reasonable questions deserve better. Company name, business license, corporate account, worker's compensation, income tax, etc. I attended a course on planning and controlling a small business once and it was put on by the Canada Business Developement Bank (or similar), but I think Trudeau may have bee PM then so not good. I'll bet the same sort of free seminars are still offered. My first company was called Great Northern Joint Painting
When the girl in the bank asked if I had a corporate seal I said, "They won't let me keep one in my apartment.".

Wouldn't painting joints make them a bit too soggy for easy smoking?

However if one does not have the acumen to run a business, it could save someone a whole load of grief and cash. Many businesses go under for that very reason. Ones first question should be whether they have what it takes to be in business, so many people have set up shop doing something they have a passion for, only to find they don't have what it takes to be a business operator.

I run my own business but am a Sole Proprietor.

You need to go to your local City Hall to see if you need a business licence.

I also got myself an accountant as numbers etc are not my thing and I wanted it done right.

If you tell us what sort of business you are going to open we could probably help a bit more.

Lots of research into places to rent, where to advertise etc. Luckily for me I had a friend in the same line of work who helped enormously and gave me a list of things I had to do.

When you say self employed do you mean working as a sole trader or running a business with employees other than yourself? I think it rather depends what your business would be as to how you structure it. Most of the rules and requirements for the formation of a business entity seem to be very similar. Whether you would incorporate as a limited company, register for GST PST etc I think would depend on your revenue generation and the nature of your work.

What would the business be doing? We own and run a limited company in BC, but I would imagine things are slightly different from province to province. Have you run a business before in the UK?
