You can't 'pre-register' as you'll need both your address (the school will be determined by that) and your TWP for your child to be enrolled in school.

When you have an address, and proof of that address, you can go to the website for the school board (public or Catholic) and figure out what your home school is. Then you go to the office and tell them you'd like to register your kids. It's a much less stressful process than getting your kids into school in the UK.

If you have an idea of the area where you'll be living, and have a visit before your arrival, I would suggest you contact the likely public school candidates and have a look round. We did this, and it gave us a feel for what to expect when we did move, and we got some general information which was useful.
In the event, we got a house in a slightly different area, which was catchment for a different school than the one we had visited, contacted that school informally from the UK then arrived to register my son properly just before school started - they were already expecting us and it seemed to make the process easier.
Make sure you have your red book for details of inoculations - they will need that sometime along the way.

Where will you be working? And what are you looking for in lifestyle? Apartment in the city? Large rural property with horses and acreage? Suburbia?
You gotta give good information to get good information.

I'm not sure where you read you'd be charged fees for your child, but the only things I ever paid for our children's schooling was books/pencils and fundraising crap.

And apologies my thread was vague. I read it on a site regarding schooling in Hamilton, it said if you're a citizen or perminent resident then all good, however if you're on a study or work permit you may well be charged fees. With regards to housing we ideal would like a 3 to 4 bedroom house, due to my wife not driving and havING 3 children 1,3 and eleven ideally need to be situated where she can get about and close to amenities and schools.
I will be working in Hamilton property to be announced as the reason I'm coming to Canada is to assist with growth as we have branches in Brampton and Mississauga. Thank you

Generally, minor children need to apply for a study permit from outside of Canada, if they want to go to study in Canada. However, a minor child can go to school without a study permit if:
- one parent (biological or adoptive) is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; or
- one parent (biological or adoptive) is permitted to study or work in Canada; or
- neither parent is physically in Canada.

It's always best to go directly to the official source, rather than rely on 'other' websites.. so here you are!
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Registration
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board FAQ
"Minor children (under the age of 18) accompanied by a parent who is a temporary resident and has a work permit, do not need a study permit or need to pay fees to study at HWDSB."

As to housing, I'm about to start work but will give you some links to previous threads/posts later - or do a search for my username and the key word 'hamilton' and select 'posts' http://britishexpats.com/forum/search.php
