Getting back to the main topic...

Ails and I had a discussion last night about when to get the kids into school.

Kyle is 13 next month and in 2nd year, Ross is 11 and in P7.

We had originally planned on moving over during the summer holidays (maybe next year), to give us all time to settle in etc, but this plan is flawed, for two reasons:

1 - The kids would spend the best part of two months with no friends, hanging about the house wondering what on earth we moved for

2 - The kids would be assessed for the first month or so of school, to determine their academic abilities, and then put in to the appropriate class. Got that from a nice lady in "Hamilton - Wentworth District School Board".

So it would make much more sense to take them out of UK school before end of year, get our ass's over to Hamilton and get them enrolled immediately. This would cover the assesment part, and the making new friends in time for summer vacation part

As has been said, you really want to get over as soon as you can

Resurrecting an old(ish) thread...

We had planned to go over last year, when our eldest would have been able to start Grade 9 in September 2011. Still no visas, but hopeful of later this year.

We are struggling here financially, with part time contract jobs (mine is due to end in December) and difficult to apply for permanent jobs here, knowing we intend to leave. If/when we get visas we will try and sell the house right away. The whole family is keen to go over as soon as we can.

IF (lots of ifs in this post) we are able to go, we have two choices:

1. Stay in Scotland until June 2013 so our son can do his Standards OR

2. Just go over and move him into Grade 10 (assessment permitting) right away (don't do Standards) - this would be half way through the school year.

What are the benefits of him doing his Standards? He is not likely to sweep the board, and may get 4 or 5, if he does well. There is a chance that he may not even get that many.

All opinions and experiences welcome!
