Many thanks, daisy
Crazy have you tried Tech Voc its on Wall Street & Notre Dame

http://www.tecvoc.wsd1.org/in_high.asp

starts at S1 which is grade 9 so that's about 14 year olds.

If you move your end of town to near Tec Voc you'll not need to move to go to Red River College which is the vocational college.

PM me and well arrange a meeting we can come down to you as Zeusmoose said your living in my wife's favorite part of Winnipeg.

My youngest is 3 so I don't need to worry about her just yet.

All this talk and just finding a good school to begin with is daunting enough never mind what grade they go into or which system is doing the better teaching.
I have to admit, that when the teacher first told us it was like a slap in the face! we thought that the schools were behind in Canada. We have now had time to talk it though with her and it will only mean him staying for this next year, he will not always be in a grade behind! If he was to go into grade two he would not be able to cope with the work, this could put him off school and at the moment he loves this school. We are very lucky we have found a good school, and although we have only been there a short time, I do trust their judgement! I am cross with myself for not realising how little he was learning back in the UK. This alone is a very big factor in deciding whether to stay here!!!
How we choose the school was, firstly looking in the areas we were hoping to settle then reading through the schools web site and getting a general feel of what they were about! I also contacted the school to ask if they had any spaces. Then we asked anyone and everyone we could connected with that area - The girls in the property rental office, etc anyone who may of heard of the school, this may sound silly, but it worked for us!

Good luck with you search!

Thanks for that. As soon as I get over I plan on attacking the estate agents and the people that my husband will be working with to get an idea of areas and schools.

Did you son start school at the very beginning of a school year or after it was started. I am concerned for my daughters adjustment if she arrives after everyone else has started. I'm probably being the over paranoid mother...

thanks for your help,

It it helps....

I was born in January and was essentially held back a year before starting school because of the cut-off dates for entry into grade one (I did all of my schooling in Canada). I was seven years old in grade one, whereas most everyone else was 6. Basically I was always older than the majority of the other students in my grade. If anything I think it was a plus. Throughout my schooling I was perceived as more mature than the other students (because in reality I was developmentally ahead, being older) by teachers and often given leadership roles, extra responsibilties and/or higher expectations. I didn't get that type of treatment in my family (as much) because in my family I was the baby. In my personal circumstances, I think I benefitted from starting late.

Ok, sorry to sound thick but when we move, at the latest Dec this year, my girls will be just 7 and 9. They will be in years 2 and 4 in England ( top infants and second year juniors for everyone who can't get their head around the new lingo)

What school years would they go into for their ages in Toronto?

I probably will want them moved up if they are ahead of the class but that is a different story.!

How advanced are children of this age group? My eldest girl is 8 1/2 and reads books without help ( my old famous five) does hard chimney adding and taking away and spells words I find hard to pronounce.

Thanks

Having two kids up for their ages and two in their age group I would reccomend them going in age appropriate classes. If you kids are ahead unlike in the UK they will assign harder work and will set challenges for them.

BUT socially the two in age appropriate are more confident and more relaxed with their peers. The other two are not slouching in the classwork but they miss out on the age development. ie 12 year playing with a 14 year old acceptable bedtimes/movies/games, boy/girl relationships older girls not interested in younger boy, girls slower developing body and maturity, can't drive for a year after friends can't go to same movies, bars dances casinos when graduating.

Thankfully my two up are bigger than average and in both cases almost the biggest heightwise in the class the tend to hang around with the young kids in the age group who are at least 8 months older than them.

So unless your kid is an academic genius I'd suggest stay in age approriate and ask for additionly work, once they reach high school 14 up they will be able to choose the right subjects to challenge them.

Am I proud of my 2 for coping in the age up enviroment you bet. Bet did it hurt them in their sociailisation. unfortunately probably looking at how the other 2 interact with their school buddy

thanks for your help,

No, Adam started just after the Easter holidays, so in fairness to him he only had a few weeks before they did their standard tests (which my son didn't even know he had done). I have to say he has settled really well and loves the school. This is mainly down to his teacher and the very friendly kids in the class. After his first week, they all drew a picture and wrote a few words about him, it was then given to Adam in a binder!!! oh yes, I forgot, there is also a very large climbing frame, swings etc

Thanks for that, having had time to talk to everyone, it doesn't seem such a big deal. The important thing is to put it right now, so he has no problems in the future. The teacher has told us it will be like you explained - he will be her ' helper ' so I hope like you he will enjoy the added responsibility and see it as a plus side!
Fingers crossed!!!
Having said that, he may not live to see next term! They (him and his 4 year old sister) are driving me mad
(just in case anyone reading this takes me too seriously, I am only joking)
