Ok, in about four weeks time we move to Calgary. What we were thinking is that we'd buy a SatNav to use as we get used to the area and the streets etc, what system is good over there, do we go for TomTom or the Garmin system that the car hire places over seem to use?

I have a Garmin Nuvi 300 - ok in the UK.
Have found out that I can get a SD card with a canadian map on it BUT the card is $200
would think that that it would possibly be better waiting and buying a unit out there but here is the link for the card that has been recommended for my unithttp://www.gpscentral.ca/accessories...hamericaSD.htm
Hope this helps

We have just bought the TomTom 910 as it gives coverage to all of Europe - USA & Canada built into the Hard Drive.
Cost £260.00 From Ebay but below is a link to let you have a look at the Spec.

It can also be used as a Handsfree Bluetooth for your mobile and an MP3 Player.
We'll see how it goes when we try it out.
Cheers D

And what pray tell is wrong with gadgets?

There's always someone who wants to spoil the fun.
Satellite navigation could be very important on a trip out to Banff. You never know when a wrong turn could take you to Winnipeg.

We where exactly like you , we where worried about getting lost in Calgary. We where also going to buy a sat nav. Our realtor told us not to bother as we would get used to getting around. We bought a street guide to Calgary and used thet instead.
We did have our problems but managed to get by. Calgary is split up into quadrants SE,SW,NE and NW, every community names their Streets simular to its own name, for example we live in Evergreen and every street starts with ever, Briddlewood streets start with Bridle.
My advise is to save your money and if you do get lost like I used to do (and still do
) I have a better understanding of finding my way round.Best wishes on the move and feel free to PM me if you need any advise, I will do my best to help you out on it and will endevor to find out for you.
Regards. Steve.

Hey! I'm not anti-gadget! I've a whole drawer full of them.
I do think that people sometimes needlessly complicate their lives with 'stuff' though. I mean, why not just roll down the car window and ask how do you get to Dewdrop Lane? This is Calgary, it's ok to talk to strangers. Though I can understand the SatNav stuff if it's for fun.

I only thought of getting SatNav because my job out there is gonna include a lot of travelling around the city. I'm gonne be doing Electrical Contracting and getting around quickly is the name of the game unfortunately. I don't have a problem stopping to ask for directions but just being able to get around pretty fast is important to me. I might just get a City-Guide, I don't know.
Thanks for the replies though.

Navcity on the internet
It cost a whopping £159.99 but worth every penny we drove all over, it listed hotels, phone numbers, petrol stations, even Tim Hortons and shopping malls.
We did moan about buying it at the time, but so glad we did. It also covers all of USA which we plan on visting when we move.
