Satellite internet?

When I was in Canada my cousin said something about them not having a very fast internet connection at their place. But that could be done by installing a satellite disk.

Your comments please.

It's more common in smaller towns ... I had a client who had an office out in Fernie ... the only way they could get internet was via satellite and it was pretty crap.

I've got satellite in Calgary, but my choices for internet are cable, ADSL or dial-up, no option to use satellite, but I guess there's no call for it.

Unreliable kinda crap...can go out in bad weather...big problem is snow covering the dish...but then you lose the tele too...

Almost worse than dial up ... just about able to support a PC Anywhere connection ... as Bob said, provided there wasn't snow on the dish or bad weather.

Problem is, you lose the service pretty easily on shite weather...and snow on the dish will kill it, not to mention the tele, and there's a lot of snow out here...though it would depend on where you are of course.

yea...I understand...that's what we were going to get.....but because we use professionally we decided to get the high speed.....mmm....questions for Mrs. G. .....never thought of before.....if your internet connection is being used professionally (at least 1/2 time) the same as your computer - is that tax deductible? hehehe :D

I've given you my MAC advice before:
Q1: Do you still have the box?
A1: If the answer to Q1 is yes, put it back in the box and take it back to the store ... etc, etc, etc

My rockpool seems to have frozen ... can you give me any advice on how to maintain one in the prairies ...

I thought smacking the ice killed the fish ... although ice here does get thick enough to drive a truck on ... not a lot of fish filled outdoor ponds in Calgary.

Satellite internet blows even when it's good - ping times are awful (speed of light, distance travelled...physics, see).

By the way, I love Macs. I keep trying to justify a new powerbook to my wife...of course, since she is already enjoyed her new ibook, she sees no benefit whatsoever in me having anything nearly as fun. So I am stuck with my boring Dell. For now.

You are a very good man.....I went through months of debating between an ibook and powerbook....the powerbook's are so expensive because I wanted a 15" screen......and couldn't justify paying $3300.00 for starters.

Finally did some research and decided on the 14' ibook with the superdrive.....a little more reasonable......wish I lived in the States though....they are cheap there compared to here. Because my new MAC is being custom built I won't see it until at least Dec 6/04....can hardly wait.

You should look into the ibooks.....you do live in the States don't you? The ones with the superdrive aren't quite as powerful as the powerbooks...but you can "soup" them up to the max and from what I understand they are very good...... :D

We did just buy an ibook, I remember telling you. My wife's choice, I was a little sceptical. But I have been really impressed with it - so much so I want to replace my ageing Dell laptop with a new powerbook. But can't justify the cost at the moment. Maybe after Christmas.

The major thing that impressed me with it was that it was so incredibly easy to network with the stuff we already have. We already have a home network that has taken me ages to make (it's my geekish little hobby), and I didn't relish the prospect of figuring out how to get this mac on it. But sure enough, it just magically worked all by itself.

My only beef with it is that it gets a lousy wifi connection. The kitchen table is a random deadzone...weird.

Re: Satellite internet?

With regards to satellite Internet....we live out in the sticks with just a dodgy modem connection speed of about 28k.....really dire.

We are looking into a two way satellite system called www.direcway.bz .....we do need a faster upload speed rather than anything else as we still do some web work for our Uk clients.

I wondered whether there was any rural dwellers out there who had this systems installed and what do you think of it?

thanks
