Very true - even here the grid tends only to work on the major roads that follow the old concession lines. Within newer subdivisions the roads follow topography and/ore are deliberately twisty to make the layout more interesting for the inhabitants. I'd still rather use a map, though!

Still, it's not all a waste, I can't be beaten at Trivial Pursuit geography
Glad it's not just me then! I also head straight for the geography questions in Trivial Pursuit to get an early slice of pie. And yes, I still have an edition of the Oxford School Atlas and Gazeteer circa 1976 somewhere at home

The amount of times we have headed to Edmonton with a house number and a road number only to find there are 20 roads of the same number all starting and stopping in different places, I thought a Sat Nav would come in handy, Calgary isn't quite so bad but it can be frustrating.

No we never have any credit on the cell phone either

It's usually me with the map - saying well which one of xx street do you want there are 3 I can see straight away.............

I have a Palm Pilot - and run TomTom on that. It's saved my bacon several times already. The most convenient thing is that I can tell several blocks away which lane I need to be in. And in downtown Ottawa - that is a must.
A couple of weeks ago we went to Montreal to watch Genesis. TomTom took us to the hotel font door, even in Montreal with it's satellite-sheilding high buildings and tunnels.
Won't go anywhere without it now.

i have a tomtom. lovely to use. but i havnt got the Canadian maps for it yet. but in the UK it was great.

i believe Garmins are better for canada/usa tho! i just couldnt justify getting rid of my tomtom which was not very old when i can just change the maps..

get a touch screen, with voice turn by turn and preferably a good search level, ie full address/postcode. ie 1020 1st street, not just 1st street...

sorry to hijack slightly, but ive been meaning to ask does anyone have the Canadian maps for tomtoms? are they any good? where is cheapest to buy them?
Hi all,

I have a UK tomtom 510 which I downloaded a us & Canada map for, (about 70 euros from tomtom site I think)

Well worth it, it's been a god send over here so far..

If you hook your tomtom up to the computer and get the latest software updates, there is even a thing called "help" on it... excellent fun to play with.. Haha..

Mine even tells me to make sure I drive on the right hand side every time I plan a route!! LOL..

I have my Tom Tom 700 with Western Europe and North American maps on it.
Have used it loads in France and Spain and in Canada - Vancouver, Calgary and now Toronto. Love it, as does OH - now he gets to see the world and not just a map (Oh, and now the it's the machine that gets it when directions are wrong).
I also love the Bluetooth "Hands Free" facility.

Why would you not? We always get lost, and we always nearly run out of fuel. It's always frustrating!

Oh well, socks, pants and gummy bears it is. Unless anyone has a 70's style police CB radio thingy (AKA Starskey and Hutch type thing) they want to sell me - then he would be made up! He may even dance about a bit if he got one of those! Oh a red kojack lamp would be cool too - anyone got those items in the attic?????
Because men don't like to admit that they're lost, or can't read a map. Simple. Ha.

Just to let you know that we bought a TomTom 910 in the UK - it came with European and north America (including Canada) maps already on it - SUPERB. This was the only one we could find in the UK that had a Canada system already installed. My husband used it all the time when he was here for 2 weeks on his own and its been really useful for finding where stuff is if you have no one to ask directions!!!! Wouldnt be without it when driving somewhere unfamiliar!
