Default saskatoon

Hi,

Has anyone got first hand experience of Saskatoon.
I have a job offer but little knowledge of saskatoon.
I see it`s the crime capital of Canada having 2 murders last year,to me this appears to be very small compared to most towns in the UK.
Anyhow any thoughts from people in the know would be greatly appreciated hopefully not much negativity which appears to be the norm on this site.

It's a super small city right in the centre of Canada. Known as the city of bridges as it is built on two sides of a river. Saskatchewan's economy is booming and for the first time for decades it is showing a net population growth. Many, because of the boom are now moving back. Saskatoon has a good university, reasonably priced housing compared to most other parts of the country, a good airport with connections to the US and other parts of Canada. The "crime capital of Canada" is somewhat misleading. Per capita, taking all crimes into account, it is true, but it's more crimes of theft, burglary, auto theft than crimes of violence. I have family there, have visited many times and would have no hesitation in moving there if a good job opportunity presented itself.

Depending on what level of calmness you desire, you may be happy or bored out of your skull. I would compare it more to somewhere like Southport with a university.

Saskatoon rocks its a great place to live. moved here 2.5 years ago from yorkshire. Ive been to other places in canada like calgary and Edmonton and a few more but cannot wait go get back to saskatoon. In the summer there is so much going on. 2 murders last year is nothing. A lot of english here as well. Saskatoon is a small city not much traffic and very easy to get around.

Hi, I live just out side of Saskatoon in a small town called Warman, we love it here. Saskatoon is only 15/20 mins away. My husband works for Frontier Peterbilt in the city.
It is a really easy city to get round, I would never even drive in Edinburgh back home and I drive here.
There is lots to do here especially in the summer, do you have kids?
Weve been here neary 2 years now and have never looked back.
If you ned to know anything else, just ask.

I'm distressed to hear that. As a child many moons ago, I spent every summer with family in Southport. It was such a sedate, classy place.

Some of these views are truck driver related so it may not be of any use to you. Hope this helps you.

things I like about living and working in Saskatoon Canada

1 The open highway
2 Supermarket shopping is easy (never busy)
3 The lack of rain over here
4 Saskatoons soccer centre (I coach and play)
5 Low crime. I had two cars nicked back in the UK. I became paranoid about locking my car and
and were I parked it. Over here I very rarely lock my car..No need.
6 The kids are safer over here. No big high fences around the schools says it all.
7 Pragmatic Canadian way of thinking.
8 Cost of running a vehical is low with easy to do licence system.
9 Hospitals are good clean and well managed.
10 People work to live over here. Quality family time is important.

Things I dislike aboout living and working in Saskatoon Canada
1 Log books.farce system, its a joke drawing little lines across paper.
2 The Canadian dodgem metality of inner city drivers. Passing on the inside
turning right at red lights..dangerous should not be allowed.
3 Seeing long queues at Tim Hortons drive in..Just park your vehicle
and walk to the counter..Sooooooo lazy.
4 People drive dog walking along service roads..dangerous for the dog
and completly lazy thing to do. Walking your dog should be enjoyable,
what enjoyment do you get from driving alongside your dog as it tries to
stressfully keep up with you.
5 Coronation St...The way it always gets moved about by CBC to accomadate
programs which to me are a lot less important, curling, womens soccer,
hockey play offs, tiddlywinks finals.
6 Lack of Yellow paint over here!! Must be very expensive to buy!!!!
7 Don`t mind the cold too much, but when it gets to -35 brrrrrrrr.
8 Way too many commercials on TV and the programs are crap.
9 Prices on goods do not include tax (PST & GST)
10 Saskatoon airport does not fly direct to the Uk and the internal flights are very expensive.

One of our neighbours had their bike stolen in 2007; police blamed it on immigrants from Alberta.

I'm surprised by how many houses and condos are still being built at the moment; it certainly seems to have slowed down, but I still see quite a few being built and sold around where we live. I'm not sure it's a good time to be looking for work though, there must be quite a few Canadians looking right now so work permits would probably be hard to get.

If the 'quantitive easing' (aka money printing) pushes up commodity prices again though, that might well lead to another boom before long.
