Don't forget that Saskatchewan is as close you can get to a communist state as well.
Evertything is controlled by the local governement, I thought Ontario was bad for competition (or lack of it), here is worse. Government run utilities are ok as well. Gas bill is $70 a month and water and electric together is $100 for a 1200 sq ft bungalow. Even so, $40k a year would be a hell of a struggle to live on. Property and grocery prices will eat that up pretty quick. Property in Regina is slightly cheaper than Saskatoon but not by much. You would be looking at $1200 a month for a 2 bed townhouse or apartment in a reasonable area. And as another poster said, Used car prices are high as well. |

40k is actually a decent half of a 2 income household. So if your Oh is joining you should find out if and when she would be able to work. If you are single it is not that bad either. If you will be th sole earner for the household it will be tight. |
Re: salary check!
not sure what you do for a living but ther are web sites that will give you an idea if what you can expect, it is also wort considering are you going to live in a city or outside we moved to SK in August and earn similar salaries to the UK but chose to live in Martensville which is about 20k to downtown Saskatoon a really easy commute but we have a better lifestyle here than we had in the UK but it would of been worse if we lived in the city property and taxes being that much higher. You can't work on a benchmark until you know what the position pays here, I get paid more as a cook here but my husband gets paid less in the motor industry we balance out to the same as in UK.
I'm not sure if this question can be answered but here goes anyway... I am on 25k in the NE, UK. My wife and I (all things going to plan) will move to Saskatchewan in 2012. I will be speaking with my Canadian employer soon and one of the things I will be enquiring about will be my salary over in SK. I may be able to negotiate, but to do this, I need a benchmark. So my question is, what would be an equivalent $ to my £25K? Thanks! mrwilson[/QUOTE] |

Well MRWilson howabout doing this:
Find out what take home pay is on $40k CAD by using the taxtips calculator here: http://www.taxtips.ca/calculators/taxcalculator.htm Work out what you will need to spend on rent/mortgage (www.realtor.ca will help on this). Work out whether you will need to buy a car. Likely yes. Only you know whether you will be bringing funds over to cover this or not. Used cars are not cheap in Canada so figure spending at least $10k. Resign yourself to spending $2-3k p.a. on car insurance. Figure spending $300 a month (averaged across the year on heating/cooling) Figure spending $100 a month or so on TV / Internet. (could be less, could be more). Assume groceries will largely even out with the UK in cost. Some you win, some you lose. See what that all leaves you with on your $40k. How does that compare with your budget/standard of living in the UK? You can now answer the 'is this going to work question'. |
