Default rustproofing on new car...

- basically in the process of buying new car - for $900 they will do all this rustproofing.
question is - any thoughts on whether it is worth it or not.

car will be garaged overnight, and i see canadian tire do an electronic rust prevention gadget...

any advice most welcome

cheers

How long are you planning to keep it? (and for that matter what is it, and what warranty does it have?) For example if it's a 3 year lease then don't bother, if you are planning to keep for 10 years then it might be a shrewd investment.

Crappy Tire electronic thingamummy is snake oil IMHO. Probably not worth it.

If you live in a dry area where they don't use salt on the roads then don't bother - just keep your car clean - less yuk to attack the metal. If you get stone chips and sctratches just touch 'em up straight off, you get most colours in touch up paints now and they are a damn sight cheaper than "rustproofing"

FWIW garraging is thought to contribute to, not prevent rust, as the ice has a chance to melt, and chemical reactions go faster at higher temperatures.

The science behind the electronic rust inhibitors is sound, but whether the canadian tire gadget is the best one out there is another thing entirely. THe technology has been used in ships for years I believe.

I know people who swear blind by the "Rust Check" service, and I would suspect that at $900 the dealer is overcharging as usual while they have you in a spending mood. Check out the cost elsewhere if you plan keeping the vehicle for ever. If you are only going to keep it for the length of the warranty I wouldnt bother, car companies have come an awful long way and are pretty good at rust prevention anyway, without the need to guild the lilly at the dealers.

Ask the salesmen why they have so little confidence in there product that they want you to spend $900, when you could buy an Audi, BMW or VW with a 12 year unlimited mileage rust warranty instead .

cheers for your thoughts - essentially its got a 5 year warranty, and i think its classic main dealer wanting people to part with cash while they're in the mood.

will def give the GM main dealer a wide berth as regards the rustproofing, and give that 'rustcheck' a dabble.
i mean, the GM matey showed us their equivalent of the canadian tire gadget and said that it was 'small vibrations' that prevented the rust!?!? - what's that all about.
he also went on to show us pictures of planes and trains that use the same stuff - hmmmm...

cheers once again for the advice.

Well, he clearly hasnt the faintest idea. Rusting is an electrochemical reaction. You can inhibit it by impressing your own current that interferes with the chemical reaction.

Technical term is "Impressed Current Cathodic Protection"

indeed - i mean, they even explain that on the canadian tire advert!

i think $900 is a bit steep, so probably go elsewhere and pay a quarter of the price.

$ 900 to pay out all at once is a waste of money.

I drive a 1993 Acclaim. In 1997 I decided to keep the car so I went to metropolitan rustproofing and since go back annually religiously. I get an annual discount so it costs me some $65 plus sales taxes.

I lived in Ottawa in the late nineties and I recall going to one of their locations on st. laurent boulevard.

I truly recommend it but NOT upfront. My car has no rust. And there is no rush. Do wait a while first so as to be sure you wish to keep the car.
