We're thinking on coming to live in Canada at the end of the year. It looks like we favour the Quinte area of Ontario. We believe that we have done most of the research needed. However there are a few scary unkowns for us mainly down to rumour I suspect...
1) Is it true that we'd find it hard pressed to find a local family GP due to a shortage. I am a Canadian citizen due to past residence back in 1982 and our two kids are Canadian by default too. However, my wife isn't. Will any of this make any difference in getting GP support? Sounds a bit off putting if rumour is true.
2) When we sell up home and bring our savings over to Canada are we going to be clobbered by UK and/or Canadian tax? If so, by how much?
3) What are the best ways of investing savings in Canada? In particular what is the best bank with reliably higher interest rates? All I remember as a kid was Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia and Toronto Dominion.
4) Belleville, Prince Edward County, Trenton seem like nice areas to bring up a young family. Can anyone out there vouch for this or perhaps even warn us off for good reason? In particular are there any other recommendations. We're not really keen on the big cities but like to be within a couple of hours drive.
5) Any other useful advice would be most welcome.
Many thanks. :scared:

1. Its hard, there is a new family medical center in Belleville (Bayview Mall on Dundas East) who recruit new doctors now and then. Register there for starters, but its a lottery. IIRC they have 5000 waiting!. Citizenship makes no difference. The urgent care clinics are not the end of the world though, its mnot like you will have no medical system to help you out.
2. You are not, but register possesions on your goods to follow, or you will end up paying duty on your own stuff!
3. Registered Retirement plan would be your best bet, but I think you cant do this till you have filled a tax return and they figure out how much you can shelter. Talk to a profesional about investment. No high street bank is going to get you a good return, and most will charge you fees for the privelidge.
4. I like it here, but my kids only a toddler. What are you looking for in particular?
5. I work in Belleville and live near Stirling, PM me if you like.

Thanks for your help Iaink. You've provided answers to many of my threads.
My Dad is from Liverpool and lives in Sarnia! Not really an educated guess that you are from that neck of the UK woods too?
By the way, we fancy Quinte following a week's stay at the Ramada in Belleville two years ago. Like Sandbanks and PEC due to it likeliness to the Gower back home apart from the summer being better there. It does have that British feel plus Canuck benefits. I may be wrong as a week really isn't enough to judge especially when on holiday.
I like Sarnia for Lake Huron and miles of coast. However, it is a little too flat for my liking. PEC is more varied which is what I like.
We also met some locals at BayView Breeze. A residential area across the bridge from Belleville. They were very nice people. This also impressed us.
