Default Rude Employer

I submitted an application to a local hotel a few weeks back for a front desk position, it wasn't first on my list but I got a phone call from the place tonight, a woman with a foreign accent (possibly Indian), she was really hard to understand but it started out she asked me if I had any hotel experience and I said no I worked in a car dealership and various office positions and she says to me then in a rude tone "So why did you apply here if you have no hotel experience?" and I said "because I have reception experience". She then asks me if I would prefer the morning or evening shift and I told her that days would suit me best (hey she gave me the choice) then she starts berating me about why I applied there if I wanted to work days as this is an evening/overnight shift. I hung up! Firstly the job advertisement didn't state that experience was required, secondly it never stated the position was evenings/nights plus she asked me what I'd prefer, I assumed then there was a choice!

Now if they had taken time to review my resume and covering letter they wouldn't have needed to ask me those questions! And I guess the fact they have been advertising this position since I arrived here in February says alot, her tone was enough to put anyone off going near the place for an interview, let alone work in the place. My other half laughed when I hung up on her but I wasn't gonna sit there and take that from anyone.

That's the first time I've had a prospective employer be rude to me! Anyone else had any similar problems?

Seems about on par with what I have experienced at some hotels when applying... Seems times have changed in Alberta, 3 years ago when I was there hotels would hire anyone they were so desperate for front desk workers.... Times have changed.

I see your in Leduc, not sure if you know about the airports website, but they also list other airport employers positions on the website, depending on what one is looking for it might be an option to find a job.

Thanks! I've been keeping an eye on all those sorta positions around Nisku/Leduc...I hope they aren't all like I experience tonight as that really did leave me feeling a bit miffed.

I'm waiting to hear back from a couple of positions which I'd love so fingers crossed I get either before I go crazy!

Ahh dont let it bother you...
People like that are either Mentally Challenged, Uneducated or just plain stupid and possbiy read you resume and felt threatened by you.
You wouldnt have wanted to work for it anyway

Something will come up and dont let your first experience of a job interview put you on the track of thinking there all gonna be like that.

Good Luck in the job search you will be just fine

I forget where I heard that recently. That people get appointed as managers (or whatever) for less than sensible reasons and then they appoint incompetent people underneath them because they are afraid if they appoint smart people - those smart people will take their own jobs. I think this goes on LOTS. If you know you aren't all that bright -- why the heck would you hire a bright person on the step lower??? At least they are bright enough to figure that out - even if they aren't bright enough to do the job!

You'll find something -- there are bright people out there looking for bright people!

Thanks guys! I feel alot better now, I'm not gonna let one idiot make me disheartened about my job search! I have two other jobs I interviewed this week (which I would love) that I'm waiting to hear back about anyway so I'm hoping I'll not have to worry about being out of work much longer.

But speaking of the rude person from the hotel, they tried to call me again tonight (on a Sunday night ), luckily I saved the number to my phone so knew not to answer, they must not have got the message first time around!

Just sounds like she was clueless. I would think yourself lucky you didn't end up working there! I'd personally call back to let them know how totally feckless they are, but that's just me.

I'm glad I won't end up working there either! lol I have been ignoring their calls, but if they are stupid enough to call again I'm going answer and tell them to stop calling me as they were rude first time around and I don't want to waste my time even interviewing with them.

It just lets me see why they have been advertising that position on and off for the 5+ months I have been here!

They have called you back, after you hung up on the woman? Maybe HER behavior was noticed by her supervisor, who still wants to talk to you? Maybe the job is to replace the (rude) woman? You'd let one person, who might not even be in charge, put you off?
C'mon.. curiosity alone must be enough for you to want to know why they are still calling!
