Question Room on a container

Hi everyone. We have booked flights for 11th April.Im sending over 30 boxes or so but really cant live without my bedroom furniture which cost a fortune and is really new.
If anyone has a container booked and could fit a queen size bed, flat packed, mattress, dresser with triple mirror and bed side cabinet.
Plus a corner unit (curio ),then please contact me asap.
I will obviously pay towards container.
Its a long shot, but worth a try eh
Cheers
Mandi

Hey Mandi,

I am not 100% sure but I think you have to be careful about bring over certain types of wood. Maybe it can be treated I am not sure, but because it is soo dry here it can crack and warp.

Don't know if anyone else can clear that up?

I've heard this but, put simply, I don't believe it for a minute. Most people in the UK use some form of central heating so the wood would have dried out to a large extent anyway. Yes the climate in some parts of Canada is dry but it's not that dry !!

We have brought all our wooden things over and none of them are suffering yet - I actually don't know of anybody that has had problems - other than those that have brought temperature critical items (instruments etc) with them

Pack them - they will be fine

When you say instruments, etc what does that mean?
My daughter plays the flute (very well I might say) and has a top of the range model she'll be bringing with her.
How does the weather effect it and should we even bring it along? It cost a lot of money (an investment tho I suppose) and it would be a real shame to have to sell it. Ta.

I haven't had personal experience of problems but others have told me that pianos are notorious for not being able to "hold their tune" after crossing the Atlantic.

As an ex-carpenter, I cannot really see that something with as little wood in it as a flute has would be a problem. The problems normally arise in wide boards as these tend to be affected most by a change in humidity (wood expands and contracts in its wide and thickness but not in its length).

Most household items that are bought these days are made of lots of pieces of wood stuck together to achieve the wide board sizes, these will not move in their width anything like as much as a single piece of wood of equivalent width would.

HTH

DON'T pack it in luggage. If she takes it as carry-on she'll be fine, but the changes in cargo can play hell with the keypads(I'm assuming she's got a silver/silver plate concert flute, the standard orchestra fare).

Hi,smelly.Im not sure on that one,i bought the bed originaly in Reno and shipped it over and it was fine. The only reason i dont want to sell it is you never get what its worth!!
Dunno yet though, all depends on how much to ship it again. This is the worst part about moving again(last year florida) having to pick what stays and goes and what you sell etc
Does anyone know if furniture is reasonably priced in Calgary?
I know here in the UK i can get a cheap bed for 100ish.
I looked at Ikes etc and they werent that cheap!!

Furniture is relatively expensive here in Calgary - particularly if you are buying "quality"

Hi,

I have been told that you can't take a mattress, unless it's treated??

we brought absolutely everything with us (except electrical stuff) and were very glad that we did. We steam cleaned our pushbikes and everything else was wrapped by the shipping co. we didn't treat any mattresses. Furniture, particularly beds, are expensive here especially once you start earning $$$. Prices seem reasonable when converting to pounds! It doesn't take long to realise when you are paid in dollars, they don't stretch far!

Hi

we have the shipping companies coming next week for quotes. We don't have much standing furniture as all the bedrooms are fitted. Just have a leather suite, dining table & chairs and a couple of sets of drawers.
Is it worth us buying a new king bed over here and shipping it or will it work out the same if we buy over there?

Jo

It depends how much you pay for it and how much it will cost you to ship it over.
Ours cost 1500, but to buy it out there would cost $4000. If i sold it id be lucky to get 600 pound for it
We got a quote for the whole house and then without the large items and it wasnt much difference. But im shipping over 30 boxes, some are flat packed furniture items, and its costing me 1200 pounds compared to the whole house on a 20ft container costing 4200 pounds.
I couldnt justify the extra 3 grand really.(which is like 7000 cnd) I just have replace 4 beds and a settee now
Hope tht helps
Mandi
