We have recently had a quote from Whites for £4150 for a 20ft container, Cardiff to Calgary. We are also getting quotes from Pickfords and Britannia as thought this was a bit expensive! Don't know what cloud we were on, but we thought removals would cost us approx £3000 max.

We've just got a quote from Pickfords - Devon to Nova Scotia - I know not quite as far!! it's £4300. We also got a quote from Whites £3895. I was a bit confused about them though, I know they're the cheapest, but the little man who came round wasn't keen to chat about how they were going to pack our stuff etc and generally sell their 'product', in fact he was only with us 10 minutes. They take away your stuff and load it into the container elsewhere - other firms are going to bring the container to the house and seal it in front of us when it's full! Also they say they have to pack everything!! Now call me a paranoid woman, but there are some bit's I don't want strange men packing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pickford, Bishop's Move and Britannia all said it was ok if we packed bits - no insurance for this of course, but then it's a job to break undies!!! Also the little man couldn't tell us who would be handling the delivery in NS. Bishop's Move told us straight away, and we've been able to check it out on line.
So, although company move is a different kettle of fish, as I'm having all my wordly possessions packed on the back of a big ship by complete strangers I think we may not go for the cheapest quote!
Good luck Stubby, with your move!

see now thats totally different to what whites have told us - infact completely the opposite to the point of making sure we have boxes etc before hand to pack 'our personal bits.. just to leave the boxes open so they can seal them...

This is a quote from the Whites letter to us 'Please note that it is imperative that you allow us to undertake all packing where the USA or Canada is the destination. US and Canada Customs will not allow any 'owner packed' cartons or cases within a consignment of household goods'.
And the little man was quite adament about this when I pointed out that we have some personal posessions that we want to pack ourselves due to having emotional and personal meaning to us. Nothing breakable, but baby toys, etc that we want to keep but don't really want other people going through!
Perhaps different parts of our country have different interpretations of the 'rules', I suppose if you leave the boxes open they can say they know what's in them and get round it that way.

you guys must be a nutter... they are talking crap... loads of people self pack and have NO issues with customs - the only issue is insurance. if they do all the packing you are covered for breakages - itherwise its only loss...
i mean they've done us a quote for us packing everything - so they are talking poo to you....
btw: they arent the cheapest we've had - currently i have 12 quotes for a 20ft container ranging from £2,600 to £14,500...

It may be 'rubbish' and we may be 'nutters', I was mearly pointing out what Whites told us and wrote in the letter that accompanied their quote.
None of the other companies we have spoken to have said this, I was just passing on a note of caution and didn't expect such a response about us!!
'Flippin' heck' there are days when you can't open your mouth without being insulted!

Getting back to the subject, does anyone know what shippers (if any) will leave a 20ft container on your drive for a week or so, allow you to pack everything then haul it off to Canada? This is the way I'd like to do it...

This was with GB Liners, Herefordshire to Nova Scotia in Nov 2004.
We packed quite a lot our self and both companies were great.

You cant leave a container on your drive, need to remember that all containers whether 20ft or 40ft will arrive on the back of an artic !!!!
You could pay for the hire of a crane to lift it off the back of the articulated lorry that will bring it, leave it then pay for the hire of a bigger crane to lift it back onto the artic as the container will be heavier.
Loads of money required for this !!!!PS not being sarcy with my reply !!!!

We have recently had a quote from UK to Kelwona and it was 5,700 pounds. We got four quotes and Pickfords is the most expensive. Try Anglo pacific, Excell international removals or Crown.

we got a quote through theremovalgroup.com (removal broker I think) for Leeds to Nova Scotia for £3625 + insurance, turns out its with Doree Bonner who lots of people have used with good results (if I remember rightly from previous threads). Reasonable I think
(sorry I forogt to say that it includes packing, shipping and delivery and unpacking)
