Renting and pets....

After lots of searching Ive only found a few places that will accept pets in a rented house. We have 2 indoor cats, they are good as gold, although most rentals here in the UK wont accept us either because of them!
Has anyone else rented in Canada and found trouble getting a place that accepts pets? We are looking at Manitoba/Nova Scotia/BC areas at the moment, depending on jobs really.
We hope to buy eventually (if our PR application is successful of course!
) but will need to rent in the meantime to save a deposit. Im just wondering how any of you have coped renting with pets in Canada?
Thanks in advance

Places that accept pets do exist, but may be scarce. They may also be not so "nice" as the non-pet homes.
We were lucky enough to find two places in Calgary where we could bring our dog. The first was furnished and totally OK actually, and the second unfurnished.
You usually have to pay a premium for the pet/s. I should have thought cat/s were easier to find places for than a dog.
You just have to keep looking.

I'd say having pets can reduce your rental choice by around 90% - particularly if you have dogs. As Rose says, it's probably a little easier with cats.
That said, we're in Edmonton where there's a pretty big surplus of rental properties at present, so you're tending to see more ads with "pets negotiable".
We've moved twice in 18 months and not really found it that tricky with our medium sized mutt.

we brought over two cats and a dog, we gave an additional months rent as a 'pet deposit'. that did the trick.

We had a bit of trouble finding a place to rent with pets as we have a 70lb dog but we found a place on http://halifax.kijiji.ca/ you just need to be a bit persistent and let them know how good your pets are, also offering a security deposit is a good idea.
hope this helps.

Also worth googling and using the 'search within' feature using the phrase 'pet friendly' or 'pets welcome.'
One of my tenants found me that way.

I've lived alone with my cat for 7 years now and have definitely had some encounters of the negative kind. As with what others have posted it is indeed more rare to find places that accept especially apartment or townhouse complexes and if they do accept them then generally be prepared to pay at least 200 dollars deposit that will NOT be refunded. The general upkeep of teh places themselves I have seen to be generally a bit more shoddy but sometimes you get the good landlords that renovate after each tenant so previous pet / owner damage is nicely erased.
My best resource was the free renters guides in convenience stores around town then cross checking blogs and reviews posted online by others staying / or having stayed there! All in all it really just depends how big of an animal lover you are, I know these potential setbacks still aren't nearly frustrating enough to make me give up my cat! ^^

In Ontario (don't know about other provinces), the no pets clause is basically unenforceable - there was an article in the Star recently about it: http://www.yourhome.ca/homes/realest...red-a-safe-bet
Of course, just because that's the law, doesn't seem to mean much in reality. From the article, it sounds like your best bet is to not mention the pets and once you've moved in, they can't do anything about it!
Our landlord said we were allowed cats but not dogs - which seems a silly rule to me, since the previous tenants cats have obviously sprayed around the apartment and getting the smell out of hardwood floors is impossible!

Oh dear, I think we might have a bit of a problem when we come over. We have an Old English Mastiff, two Labradors and a Boxer Cross

If there's something that boils my piss, it's laws that dictate how someone can choose to derive income from their own personal property.

That said, other tenants in the building got a yappy little dog. They did not ask if it was ok, in fact, they tried to hide it. They were gone in the space of a day.
The moral of the story is, don't be dishonest and have some respect for the people who own the property you live in. If they say no pets, don't go behind their back. Approach them and ask nicely. If the answer is no, then deal with that like an adult.

When I lived in UK I rented my Ont house
I had tenents with pets, I was not allowed to say NO PETS...even tho that is what I wanted to do, the damage they caused is not worth it. ALL owners say their pets behave, don't believe it! So when it came down to renting after they left, I simply asked normal questions, where do you work, do you smoke, children, pets....if they said pets I said ok thank you I will call you as showing house to others....when someone without pets came along, they got house.
So for government tells me I have to let pets in my home, I simply didn't rent to pet owners, even tho I have been one.....I didn't mind the pets, it was the careless owners who not repair the damage their pets did. I was not allowed to charge a damage deposit, so what would you have done?
So no pets was easiest...
