renewing a British Passport
My UK passport has a few years to go yet (about 3, I think) what happens if I am still living in Canada and will be re-newing it? Will I have to return to the UK? I have no intention on becoming a Canadian citizen as I don't intend staying here forever, so want my UK passport up to date at all times. Thanks

You send off to Washington for a new one and pay through the nose for the pleasure.

From a purely practical point of view canadian citizenship and passport makes a lot of sense if you are eligible, you don't have to want to stay for ever to benefit in the short term, and dont have to give anything up to get it. Its simply a lot less hassle and leaves options open to you that you would not otherwise have.

Just to clarify, although good for only 5 years, its still more cost effective to get a canadian passport twice than to get a UK one....
I have no idea how they can justify the extraordinary cost of getting a passport from the north american center (compared to getting one in the UK)...reason enough to boycott it for me.

Like EVERYTHING governmental in any country, they roll their sleeves up to make sure that they are into your pockets as far as they can get! Having said that, it's only about $80 more than getting it in the UK, so definitely not worth making a special trip for, but would be something to consider if you were already going home for a holiday.I'm not taking Canadian Citizenship either, don't need it, happy enough with who I am!

, its just a bit of paper...(well, about five bits of paper by the time they are done...) Nothing about you actually changes...except your bank balance.

I just got three childrens passports in Oct of last year, in Ottawa just b4 they did the switch to Washington(who knew they were going to do that)?...
anyway, It took 9days to get them...expensive to say the least..
I did email England, to see whilst on holiday could i apply there with a UK address, and lady in passport Dept , said YES. so there ya go!!
the adult british passport...is around $265 cnd
I have been in Canada and don't have my CND passpor/citizenship..has caused some problems getting over the USA, though, as you will need a Permanent resident card if flying, $50 for 5yrs...so it all adds up at the end of the day. or $6 at the border, (could have gone up by now)???
CND citizenship can take up to 2yrs now, and i'm not waiting that long, as we are moving soon back to England.
anyway, It took 9days to get them...expensive to say the least..

Of course, the $200 cost of Canadian Citizenship needs to be added to the cost of a Canadian Passport to make a fair comparison with the renewal cost of a UK passport.
Then I guess it depends on how often it's going to be renewed (given the $200 is a one time only fee) and whether you want to keep an option of living in Europe at a later date.

Living in Europe later is not really relevent, you are still a UK citizen regardless of whether your passport has lapsed, so thats never lost and easy enough to fix as and when it becomes an issue.

True enough...but if the reason for getting citizenship is to save money on a UK passport and then you need to replace an expired UK passport later, then it's not necessarily been a saving.
