Removal Quotes
At the last Emigrate show we arranged a few appointments for removal companies to come round and give us firm quotes. We are moving from Surrey (UK) to Halifax Nova Scotia. The quotes we have had are for a 20ft Container, with the removal companies doing all the pacing and unpacking. They came out as follows:
PSS £3454 (Standard Liability Insurance 2.8%)
Doree Bonner £3900 (Marine Insurance 3%)
Bishops Move £3773 (Marine Insurance 3%)
Fox £3134 (Marine Insurance 3%)
Fox also quoted £3968 for a 40 ft container, as we're ever so slightly over a 20 ft container and would need to lose a few things to fit everything in.

Re: Removal Quotes
These seem cheaper than other prices people have posted recently, is there a reason for this? Perhaps because it is halifax?

Re: Removal Quotes
I would expect that is the reason. All the boats go to halifax so if thats your final destination instead of things having to be shipped across land too then it should cost less.

Hampshire to PEI Removal quotes
Anglo Pacific
40ft Container - 1700 cubic feet - sole use
£5410 + Standard Liability Insurance @ 3% of the value of goods declared.
Seemed very professional
Robinsons
Quote to arrive by Tuesday next week.
40ft Container - 1400 cubic feet ???? - sole use
Again very professional.
Apart from the difference in cubic feet the only other things were:
Anglo said nearly all containers entering Canada are not opened by customs where Robinson's said 9 out 10 containers are unloaded and inspected by Canadian customs.
Anglo said dog bedding is not really an issue as long it is clean. Robinsons said to throw it all away as customs will inspect it and if they find hairs on any of it they will charge you for destroying it and fumigating the container.
Will post other quotes as and when I get them.

Anglo Pacific - Kent to Kelowna
20ft, sole use @ £5780.00 ex insurance & storage at Vancouver.
Britannia - 20ft sole use @ £4730.00 ex insurance & Storage at Vancouver
Robinson - for some reason quoted us for a 40ft sole use @ £6,780
I asked them to re-quote for 20ft like everyone else has!!! - £4,700 ex insurance & Storage at Vancouver. The storage cost is £425 handling charge and £60 per month.
Our friend deals with Marine Insurance so we are going to get his advice on this as we are unsure if one gets a good deal from the removal companies.

Re: Removal Quotes
Freight rates through to the maritimes have reduced over the past few weeks. For Halifax for the ocean leg they are probably now obtaining rates in the region of £800-£900 from the shipping lines. Obviously the haulage at both ends, clearance, Packing etc etc need to be added to that before you freak out !
In terms of insurance personally I would go for marine insurance rather than standard liability. It tends to be more encompassing and there is generally less burden for you to prove things e.g. that the Royal Doulton glass really did break in transit as a result of the movers rather than you dropping it yourself. You can also often insure the actual shipping costs if the worst were to happen and your container went overboard. The companies often will be able to offer a better rate than 3% on marine insurance so worth bargaining over.
For anyone shipping over to BC, if time is not a factor it is worth discussing the shipping line the removals company will be using and the routing they are intending to base your quote on.
Quotes are most commonly based on conference shipping lines through to Montreal and then rail across to Vancouver. However, at least one of the conference lines does have a different routing to Vancouver going through the Panama Canal. It is a longer transit, (around 42 days I think) but it also comes in about £600 cheaper (Canadian rail freight is expensive).

Re: Removal Quotes
Robinsons go via the Montreal route then by rail to Vancouver - 5-8 weeks including 2 weeks at customs. But our quote said 33 days Anyway they were still coming in quicker then the others for shipping times, which were 8-11 weeks.

Re: Removal Quotes
We used Simpsons in Kent - £2960 for a 20ft, 3% insurance, Kent to Halifax. Very nice folk at the UK end, container should be arriving next week (under 4 weeks )
We lived quite close to their depot, so that may be a factor in price, and I also asked them to requote, as the 1st quote they gave (for a shared container) was quite high - the requote was a lot more reasonable, so this may be a tack to take with other firms! Express disbelief, fall of your chair etc, and ask them to quote you happy

Re: Removal Quotes
We used Robinsons who quoted us 6 -8 weeks for our goods to arrive in Calgary. Our belongings did not in fact arrive until 12 weeks later. When making enquiries about the whereabouts of our belongings we were lucky if we got a reply and our so called personal adviser was extremely un-helpful. We are now aware our belongings went from England to Montreal, from Montreal to Vancouver and then from Vancouver to Calgary !!!!!!. The company at the Calgary end (Williams International) were good when delivering the goods from Calgary to our home but I certainly would not recommend Robinsons.
Good luck with who you eventually choose.
