Hi All, Just like to introduce myself as i'm new and say that I'm thinking about trying to get a WP for the Vancouver area - I was there for 18 months in 2006 and at the time was unsure about making the move permanent - Now due to the recession and not getting the work here i'm thinking about giving it another go? I'm a time-served carpenter/joiner and this is what i did there in 06. - Could anyone tell me how the construction Industry is at the moment in Van - when i was there it was booming - Thanks in advance

It's not booming now. There is still work around but it is harder to get and much more price sensitive.

Cheers for the replies lads - I know everywhere is feeling the pinch, but I'm thinking about going through the same people as before - No harm in trying

I am a Project Manager and have just completed a large job in Vancouver.
I am based on VI and found getting site carpenters/millwork installers pretty easy with loads of competition for vacancies.
I am also in the middle of another project here on the island, but have found labour pretty hard to get hold of.
So, to cut to the chase, have you thought of VI?
I have 4 british guys leading my teams on VI and 2 of them did work in Vancouver but found it difficult to get work and made the move and are really glad they did.
Just a thought.

Hi @ all,
I've been reading this forum for quite a while now and just decided, that it's time to register... ;-)
We are living in the Sea-to-Sky-Corridor at the moment, but think about about moving to somewhere else. As my hubby is a German carpenter (framing, finishing and whatever a carpenter does), I'd like to ask, if the job perspectices on Vancouver Island are still "good" or if it has changed.
Thanks for any answers and have a great long week-end!
Gabi

Hi Gabi, I honestly couldn't say whether there's work on the Island or not as I'm in Scotland - I've been trying to get a job offer so i can get a twp(not easy), but I don't think this is the site for securing work. A guy called paul on this thread seems to think there's work on the island, but when i private messaged him saying i would be interested in coming to the island he never responded(and he can't get the guys)?? Your best just to fire off cv's to company's and see if you have any joy that way - I've did this myself for the van area and had 1 reply but that guy obviously never new about the LMO application - they're in surrey? If you want his email i can send it to you - they do framing. I might have an offer in Saskatchewan, although not my preference, if that gets my foot in the door so be it! At least your in BC - all the best! G

Thanks SashaG!
Well, according to the Jobbank-website, there are only 4 positions on the island at the moment - therefore I was just curious... ;-)

Good luck and all the best for you, too!
