Hi,
I am a bit worried about this, as my partner is in a job he doesn't like and his employers are pretty horrible, so he wasn't planning on telling them about his plans to move until he has to hand in his notice. Does it have to be the current employer definately?
I'm lucky cos my employers are great and I've already told them about our plans so that will be ok, otherwise we're just hoping my partner can find a temporary contract to tide him over before we go

Nope, doesn't have to be a current employer. If the boss is a nightmare, maybe there is a senior colleague who could write the reference?
Worst case scenario - He gets a reference from someone else and writes a covering note to Bunac explaining that he cannot tell the employer about his plans to leave. I'm sure it won't be the first time they've seen this.
I got a colleague of mine from my previous job to write my reference, she stated that she knew me on both a 'professional' and a personal level for X amount of years. Bunac must have been happy with it as they never contacted my referee and I was given a visa
