I first moved to Red Deer in 1976 and have lived here for the majority of the time since. After being away for a few years in my employment I moved back here 10 years ago next month. I love Red Deer! I was born and raised in Calgary which is a nice city but way too big for me and I find Red Deer just the right size. I don't have any children (neither does my husband) but all of my extended family live in Alberta. One would think that being raised here I would be used to the winters by now but that is not true in my case. The winters are somewhat milder than they used to be but they are still too cold and definitely too long for my liking. I bug my husband all the time that he has no idea what he's in for with Canadian winters.
I have been to the UK to visit only three times now but I love it there! It is a beautiful, wonderful country. However, for my husband and I it made better sense for him to relocate here than me there, at least for now. Down the road who knows.
Anyhow, I found it interesting to read your post and all the subsequent replies and know that there are people so close by from the UK. Not sure if there are any groups here but there are lots of friendly people!

We are comming to Red Deer - This Year - Hubby has to do an exam and we have to sell the house but we are planning to be there in a couple of months - maybe just after Easter - can't wait!!!.
We have a 10 year old daughter and we are mid thirties.
We hear it's -42 at the moment - I'm shivering with you!

How exciting!!! We will welcome you to Red Deer with open arms. What part of the UK are you from? What brings you to Red Deer? Easter or thereafter will be a good time to come. The weather should be improving by then. This week it got down to -48C with the wind chill. It has been very cold for awhile now but it looks as if there's a bit of a break in sight.

Get yourself out and watch a few of the Red Deer Rebel games.
A lot cheaper and just as entertaining as the NHL games with all the youngsters fighting to break into the big league.
Then in a few years time you can say you saw one of the greatest D-men in hockey ever when he was just starting out.
