Post Recruitment agencies

Hello all,

Been looking at lots of options to find work (with not much luck) does anyone know of good recruitment agencies I should try I'm looking in the Halifax, NS area? I found Scotia Personnel they wanted $800 they sounded good but told me they weren't a recruitment agency and that they wanted that money. It sounds like a lot would it be worth it? I have heard stories of people paying loads of dosh and not getting anywhere. I work with children by the way if that helps...

Thanks

Sounds very fishy. If they are not a recruitment agency, what are they? A recruitment agency earns a commission from the employer. Usually a job seeker does not pay anything to a recruitment agency. Suggest you read this previous thread.

Thanks for that it was very interesting. They said they have clients and that they set up nannies for the clients. (if that makes sense?) They have a website http://www.scotia-personnel-ltd.com/ I always see their name advertising jobs on the job bank website which is why I thought they were ok. Hmm not so sure?....

Hi or4ngecrush,

I often look at this site http://halifax.kijiji.ca for childcare, it seems to have everything and advertises theses sites www.diamondpersonnel.com for nannies, enanny.net and GuidetoNannies.com hope it helps.

Hmmm ....... I'm pretty sure they would be earning commissions from the employers so, by demanding fees from job seekers, they are "double dipping," I suspect. Even if you pay their fee, there is no guarantee that you'll get a job.

Besides that, a look at their website suggests to me that they are not interested in arranging nannying jobs for people who are applying for permanent residence. I suspect they arrange nannying jobs for people who come over on those Live-in Caregiver Program visas. The visa is valid for a year, and it's valid only as long as you work for a specified employer. You and your employer can renew your contract with each other and apply for a renewal of your visa the next year. Also, you can leave one employer, get another offer of a nannying job, and apply for another visa under the Live-in Caregiver Program. Well that's the theory. In reality, you effectively become an indentured labourer.

If you went back a year or more, and scanned the posts of babyblue , I think you would find it made for sobering reading. I hope it doesn't offend you if I quote your case, babyblue, but I believe it may help to save or4ngecrush from grief.

In addition to having read babyblue's posts here at the BE forum, I have met some "real life" foreign nannies in Calgary. A few of them have had great employers, and some of them have had awful employers. A Filipino nanny whom I used to meet on the bus from time to time suffered a lot. However, her family back home depended on the money she sent them, so she just endured the situation. I felt really sorry for her.

If you get a job in the child care field once you have PR status, however, you have more mobility. If you're unhappy with one employer, you can look for another one. If you're unhappy with the field in which you're working, you can look for a job in another field.

I really appreciate that piece of advice I will look into it more and will research babyblues posts. I hope that yes I could enter as a nanny but in the future try for other work (if I got a PR) as I feel I'm really qualified in my field and have lots of varied experiences to offer an employer.

But thats good advice you've gave me.

Appreciated

Emma
