Not having a car in summer would be juat about OK but I'm way too much of a wuss in winter to want to stand at a bus stop in minus something silly in the hope a bus might turn up!

There are plenty of nice places in Calgary with good links but you have to remember the winter weather is likely to be nothing you will ever have experienced before, unless you've lived somewhere similar!

Be sure to check out the crime stats too when deciding where to go, especially if you're intending public transport. You should be able to find somewhere with your rental budget in a nice area.

Thank you for that. I would prefer not to have a car therefore in the city limits with good transport links would be better.

I just feel that it's an additional expense I don't want especially whilst I wont be working for the first wee while of being there. By the time I find a job I want to do (and get it) it'll be coming in to autum time so we may look at getting a car then.

Keep these coming, I will look at Varsity btw and ty!

Brentwood's really nice too, with an LRT station & bus links, very low crime & excellent schools. Plus it's within close walking distances of a variety of shops, food places & a dance studio which does adult as well as kids classes.

Would definitely be worth you checking out & the rental prices would be within budget there too.

fyi

Brentwood, Dalhousie and Varsity are basically right next to each other

IMO, they are all fantastic options for a community to live in.

Agreed but Brentwood is a nicer neighbourhood IMO. Varsity, while nice, is more expensive & doesn't have it's own LRT. That was the reason I didn't add in Edgemont, although bus links are good from there too.

IMO Dalhousie has some rougher patches of housing & some "scrubbier" areas. However, it is good for shops & transport.

Seems like we're all leaning to the NW though! :-)

It's low income housing, not exactly slums.

Anything on Dalton Drive south of Dalhousie Drive is very easy to avoid.

Hence the word "scrubbier" - they look like they need a scrubbing up, which is a fair assessment of some parts of that area. I didn't mean to imply it was like a slum ;-) & I hope my comment won't be interpreted as such.
