I can accept that within certain domain areas words can take on very specific meanings that are well defined and understood by others working in those areas. You and Novo are both guilty of using your high level jargonistic interpretation of the word 'average'. 'Average' as defined by mathematicians in ivory towers is not the same as average defined by social scientists, economists, or lay people. Anyway, this became boring yesterday.

It is, Mean, Mode and Median is what is taught in schools, nothing subjective about it. Each can give a completely different result. From a statisticians perspective, depends on what answer you want as to what you use.

I just stated that Novo was right, was that too laced with jargon?

But he is wrong. A median is an average - do you dispute this?

Hes not wrong.

Median may be "an" average, but its not "the" average, in everyday parlance "the average" is taken to mean the mean unless otherwise stated.

Enough already, arent you bored of this yet?

The layman's conception of the term average is likely to be rather vague or ambiguous.

When talking about salaries, the median is the average as that is most representative of the general population. This leads me to:

This is wrong. The term 'median average' is not plain nonsense - everybody understands what it means.

And yes I am bored. But I can keep banging on about this all day if necessary. You'll get sick of it before me and I get to have the last word

Hi,
Well my reality check .....
Is i occasionaly pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming , ( or in some kind of 'life on mars' / 'ashes to ashes' dream...)
likewise, sometimes think someone is gonna come along and mess it all up....
Our three years here have been amazing, a real transformation from what we had in the UK.

Now what happened to the ' it rains all the time in vancouver'
And where's this snow they keep threatening me with......
And what happened to this property crash we were going to have..
cheers
jerry ( north van and lovin it.)
