RBS ATM withdrawls
#1
Hi guys,I have tried several different ATM's in vain, trying to withdraw money from back home.
Has anyone had any joy using a Royal Bank of Scotland Visa Debit card in an ATM?
I'm in Edmonton and have tried:
Scotiabank
TD
BMO
RBC
My dads Lloyds card works in the RBC but it just says unable to proceed or transaction cancelled when I try my RBS card.
I've had to do a bank transfer there, but would prefer to be able to hit an ATM rather than wait 2-5 working days to get my money.

".. To use your Visa debit card hassle free when you go abroad make sure we hold your up-to-date mobile or best contact number. You can update your details in branch or through Telephone or Internet Banking (if registered). It’s also a good idea to save our overseas number (+44 (0) 1313 392 573) on your mobile in case you need to get in touch with us .."
Theoretically, your bank card should work anywhere you see a 'visa' sign. Try Scotiabank or failing that, one of the atm's in 7-11 or similar, I found my UK debit card worked there when it wouldn't elsewhere. (Be aware of the charges though!)

Edit: If there is a Casino anywhere near you, it should work there!

Some banks have international partnerships - a bit like the airlines. For example, I can use my Scotiabank debit card free of charge in Bank of America ATMs in the US and Barclays in the UK. Does RBS have an international partner in Canada?

Have you told RBS that you are abroad? It may be being refused / cancelled if they think that it is a fraudulent transaction.

the visa.com website has a tool thingy you can use to find your nearest atm on the visa network

I have one c/c that has never been a problem and another that needed me to tell them in advance.
My debit card also needs me to tell them. I send a secure email to say I might need to use it between this date and that date and they thank me for letting them know my travel plans.

Not that I was going to use it in the Casino.

Thanks everyone, looks like all the Visa friendly ATM's are clustered together on the other side of the river from me,no wonder I wasn't having any joy!

Am I right in thinking you're on the north side?..There's a HSBC on Jasper Ave. that I sometimes used to get cash from a British visa account.

Hi! Scootb,
I had the same problem when I tried to use my RBS visa debit card. You will have to go into a bank and carry out a visa transaction, the transaction will be treated as a credit card transaction. You maybe able to use a Scotiabank ATM.

You shouldn't have to go into the bank. There's an option to chose "credit card transaction" on the ATM screen. Chose this even if using a Visa debit card.

I called RBS this evening and it turns out that despite the other half telling them that we were going to Canada, they thought a transaction was suspicious so froze both of our cards.
One quickish phone call has resolved it,too late to cancel the bank transfer though,I should have called RBS first,at least I know now lol.
Tried the TD bank in Bonnie Doon after the call and my card worked
I chose chequing account and it worked for me at the ATM.

Knowing that Scotiabank has a connection with Barclays in that respect will save us a few buck here and there. Thanks for the tip.
