Default Rabies Vaccination

I am taking my 5 year dog to Canada with me and she is fully up to date with vaccinations etc. When she was vaccinated against Rabies last year, I was told that the vaccination now lasts for 3 years and does not need to be repeated yearly, does anyone know if Canada accept this?

www.ask.com and www.ehow.com

The UK is a rabies-free country so you don't need a rabies shot before moving to Canada. However, it should be done once here because Canada is not rabies-free.

1st two shots are done 12 months apart, thereafter it is done every 3 years.

ScottandSel - Different rules will apply if moving from Greece.

Best people to ask are DEFRA, they are the uk government authority on exporting pets and we found them much more useful than any of the uk vets for advise.

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/.../canin3e.shtml

Importations of Pet Dogs - Section 3
Dogs three (3) months of age or older from countries that Canada does not consider to be rabies-free

Domestic or pet dogs may enter Canada if accompanied by an original valid rabies vaccination certificate, which is issued by a licensed veterinarian (a veterinarian who is licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the country of origin) in English or French and which clearly identifies the dogs and states that they are currently vaccinated against rabies.

This certificate should identify the animal as in breed, colour, weight, etc., and indicate the name of the licensed rabies vaccine used (trade name), including serial number and duration of validity (up to three years). Please note that if the duration of validity is not indicated on the certificate, the vaccine will be considered to be valid for one year.

There is no waiting period imposed between the time the animal is vaccinated for rabies and the time the animal is imported into Canada.

If the animal arrives at a Canadian port of entry and does not meet the requirements above, an inspector will order the owner-at the owner's expense-to have the animals vaccinated against rabies within a specified period of time and to provide the vaccination certificate to an inspector.

Rabies vaccination or certification is not required if the dogs are less than three (3) months of age.

My dog was vaccinated in the UK against Rabies and on his pet passport it says this is good for 3 years.

However, when I had to take him to a vet in Canada (for an ear infection) they said he should have another rabies shot a year after the first jab and then he would be good for three years! They even called the drug companies for clarification on this.

I said as long as it won't harm him you can do it! He was fine afterwards...

Hi, my dog has had her rabies vaccinations for the last 4 years, last year she had her rabies vaccination and the vet said that she would be good for the next 3 years, I was just concerned about her getting into canada with it.

I think you're going to be just fine. I know, it still doesn't stop you worrying though.

Do not be confused with how long vaccine is good for opposed to when you have to give their annual vaccines
It might not apply out west, but in Ontario it is mandatory to vaccinate once a year ALL domestic pets.

Typically the drug companies say it is good for 3 years, as large animals do not need a yearly vacc. And vets use the same vaccine on large animals they do dogs and cats.....or at least that is how it was when I worked in vet hosp

Thanks for all the advice, will double check with DEFRA and my vet as I will have to get it all done before we leave on 17 April as she will follow 5 weeks later
