quick job hunting question
#1
evening all
I am sending out resumes prior to our recce next week. A couple of the firms I am sending too specifically state no telephone calls. All the advice says follow up calls are good.
My reserved Scottish self says thats fine leave them with the resume, however is this a standard thing that everyone ignores? or is it the quickest way to get your resume binned?
I suppose I should say that the jobs that say no calls are actually looking for staff rather than me cold calling (or emailing)
Cheers all

Sending a resume, with a cover letter explaining that you are in Canada next week looking for work, how long you are staying and how they can contact you in Canada would be worthwhile. It would also be worthwhile to mention your residency status and when you would be available to start work if given the opportunity.
You can always ask for the opportunity of an interview in the letter. Whether you get one or not would remain to be seen.
Which part of the country are you visiting?
Good luck.

Thanks for that
We are of to Calgary for a week flying on Friday. I didnt think it wise to disregard specific instructions, but all the advice tends to lean toward a slightly more aggressive work seeking culture which doesnt come naturally to me.
I have done as you suggest as regards letting them know when and where I will be so its fingers crossed.
Cheers

Hope it goes well. If you have an opportunity to print some personal cards (like a business card), with your name and UK contact details, these could be of use.
Also worthwhile asking contacts for their card and asking you you can contact them in the future. What line of work are you interested in?

Thanks guys
I am looking for work as an architectural technician/technologist the resumes are done and on memory stick. Unfortunately I didn't manage the business cards in time.
I am also finishing off a portfolio of some of my drawings in case they want to see that.
From what i have seen on the net its a very word of mouth type of job there are not many advertised jobs in this area.
Fingers crossed although with my wife being a nurse and having a provisional job offer there's not the same pressure. I have never looked for work before though it has always come to me.
Cheers

Hi Tom,
We are kind of in the same boat as you, we have 14 days in Calgary, Banff and Edmonton at the end of this month and like you I have never gone out looking for work, been in the military since I was 16, so never even had a job interview!
I would love to take advantage of being over in the area I would love to live, work and bring up my family, but I wouldn't know where to start with regards contacting prospective employers.
Would they think it cheeky if I turned up on their doorstep CV in hand.

I'm really nervous, this is all happening pretty quick we had always discounted Canada due to the long waits and the cash required on landing for normal SW application.
We had a near thing with Oz and it was then we found this site we read up on Brisbane and it just wasnt for us but it led us to here and we learned about PNP and TWP especially for nurses. My wife snet off a resume about three weeks ago and we got a phone call within 2 days.(thanks Boxerdog)
We realised that we could be out there relatively quickly so we had to scramble to put this trip together. We are leaving the kids with the inlaws for a week and thats going to be hard. I dont know how we are going to look at houses, schools meet with OHs employer and find work for me in a week and still have time to get a feel for Calgary.
Jilly from what I have read finding work is really all about effort on your part, it doesnt seem unusual to turn up on someones doorstep with a resume. I know it feels a bit impolite, but when in Rome as they say.
As I said above I dont have the pressure of finding work to get over and TBH we might not need me to be working for a while anyway it might work better for the kids if I am home to help them settle.
Who knows whats best but we are going on Friday an we will do our best this site has been invaluable in geting us even this far so big up to you all.
Cheers
