Quality paint

Sorry, I realize that home decorating is not the most exciting of topics but this is something that's driving us mad. :curse:

Where do you go to get decent paint here in Canada. Have now tried various stores and all seem to provide watery, thin paint that requires multiple coats. Never had an issue like this in the UK. The likes of B&Q or Homebase would not sell the standard of paint you seem to get here.

Benjamin Moore

Costs a bit more - but is fab and easy to use - barely a splatter anywhere from the roller - and you can sometimes get away with one coat depending on colour and what's under it.

Re: Quality paint

1. Behr
2. Ben Moore
3. Glidden exterior latex (use it inside for kitchens/bathrooms/mudrooms - it's like an enamel).
4. CIL Dulux

PS. Oil based (alkyd) paints will not be manufactured in Can as of 2008 nor sold as of 2010.

We have been really happy with Rona's own paint - keep away from the Debbie Travis stuff though - it doesn't seem to stick:blink:

Spent the last couple of days decorating.
We've been using a paint called Sico. It covers really well, has almost no smell or VOCs and hardly splatters at all off the roller. Well impressed.

Re: Quality paint

There is a show on TV called The Shopping Bags. These young women from Vancouver test out various things. They tested paint and found Benjamin Moore covered the best.

I recently bought some exterior flat paint from Home Depot and it says CIL Dulux right on the can. It covered really well. I painted my front door and my french doors. I did one coat on the french doors because they had been painted a couple of years ago. I did two on the front door. Then I used it on the window frame of my new window inside my kitchen and did two coats and it covered really well.

I don't know, but I would guess that exterior paint would last longer if you used it indoors and besides I have three quarters of a gallon left so I might as well use it up on something.

We got ours from General Paint, and they seemed to be fine; I did put two coats on, but mostly because the room was Barbie Pink before so I wanted to be sure it was properly covered up :).

They also spent about half an hour giving us advice on how to do a good job, though admittedly it was a slow day with few customers and we ended up buying a bunch more stuff as a result.

Aftern 21 years in Canada, I have found Home Hardware to be the best. I also believe that there are numerous reports (which I cannot quote) to back this up. I find that the Benjamin Moore brands that claim one-coat coverage are just a lot of hype and never actually do what they claim. Then again, it depends what colour you are covering and if it is unpainted drywall.
