I admire individualism and look forward to expositions on the thrill of driving a Toyota Prius, the satisfying flavour of Canadian supermarket cheese and the exquisite musicianship of Avril Levine's former husband.
Remember Ken Jennings? Local television here showed the end of his streak then went back to the middle of it. |

Hi, I am completely new to this site, and to threads...and, I see that these posts are all very old now, so this little response may be lost in space...but here goes...we moved to Canada from the UK 15 years ago, for the space, and with the intention of a better life....we don't have regrets (well, not too many)....but the grass isn't always greener on the other side! And although homes here might have a cheaper price tag, the utilities are way more expensive than in the UK. We would move back there now, if we could afford to, but the cost of homes has risen way too much! Good luck with the move :)

Re: Pros and Cons of Emigrating to Canada from UK
Utilities looked significantly cheaper when I looked into it but I could be mistaken.
Converted to CAD dollars in the UK I pay $125/month gas and electric, $50/month water, $95/month TV,Internet phone. This is 2 of us in an end terrace, no kids, we rarely have the heating on, have the lowest tv/Internet package and my water rate is the cheapest I've even had. So this is about as cheap as it can get. I don't really consider it expensive tbh but Canada's seemed cheaper in Alberta. |

In the UK my water was around £10 a month (just me). Here it's about $60 (four). UK gas and electric £30-£40 monthly, here $251. But in the UK the heating would only be on for an hour to get up to, evenings and weekends and then only for the coldest times. Outside those times I'd have just used the gas fire. Outside of winter it would be hot water only. I suspect my UK bills would have been higher than Canadian ones if the heating was on 24/7 for practically four continuous months and about half the time at either end and then running the AC for large parts in summer. In the winter before we moved to Moncton, we were in a 6 unit apartment building in Montreal. Our apartment heating wasn't used at all that winter. Presumably the heat from the stairwell was enough...unless other tenants' heat kept us warm. There appear to be many on BE in condos and other rentals paying a pittance for their power. |
