project manager from ireland/uk looking advice on employment
hi, im preparing to head out to calgary or edmonton in the coming months to work as a project manager or site superintendent in construction.
can anyone give advice on how project management / site superintendent roles in canada differ from the same role in the uk and ireland ??
also, can anyone advise on which of the larger companies are actively encouraged to hire uk project managers / site superintendents and assist with LMO's , visa's etc... i'd really appreciate any help .....cheers

Do you have your PMP. Qualification ?
If not I'd look into it

In your previous post you say you're an electrician, so how much project management experience do you have?
Also, you say you're 'moving' but then mention LMO's, so if you don't already have a visa you will just be visiting rather than moving just yet!
If you're going over on a job hunting trip then read the Job Hunting section of the Wiki if you haven't already, there's loads of info there including how to plan a recce.
Good luck!

Hi
I was an electrician by trade and have done all updated training. I have managed to continue to practise as an electrician as a sideline whilst being in project management for the past 18 years or so
I am a chartered member of the CIOB which is the equivalent of a bat helper degree in senior construction management
I intend to secure employment by way of LMO before heading out and am working on this at present
Thanks for whatever input you can give

I am MCIOB and it is not the equivalent of a degree in construction management..which i also have..also PMP qualification isn't all that relevant to construction project management either...also CIOB is only recgonised by expats in the main..most Canadian employers do not have a clue what it is...so if you are relying on CIOB getting you through the door then hope that it is an expat who is hiring.

Hi
Thanks for your view on CIOB , I will send you link to explain how CIOB has been recently recognised by qualification assessment agency here in the uk
In the meantime have you any advice on obtaining a pm position over ther ?
What do you work at yourself and how long are you over?
Cheers

my apologies, MCIOB is now deemed as equivalent to a bachelor's degree in senior management, not construction management as i initially quoted
see this link for your own interest:

so i guess i need to hope for a canadian employer who is interested in hiring me as i have this qualification coupled with 20 years experience in construction management running projects.....so lets hope

Anyway on the positive side there is always work and opportunities in Edmonton or Calgary..it will depend to what level your experience runs with regard to project management as to what type of role would be available.

Re: project manager from ireland/uk looking advice on employment
its says it the equivalent of a bachelors degree that's it..nothing about senior management..and like i said CIOB is irrelevant as it mostly means nothing here..i have been MCIOB since my mid 20s i can honestly say it has never really helped me in my career in the UK or Canada.

Best thing to do is head out there on a job hunting recce trip (as you're planning to), and hopefully find an employer prepared to hire you and do the LMO application for you. If you haven't seen it already, the Job Hunting section of the Wiki has loads of useful info in.
Best of luck.

Personally I wouldn't put my email address in a public post like that
Unless you want to be inundated with spam for the next millennia or so
