Private Reg / Licence Plate

Hi,
Just curious really. I have a private plate in the UK and I'm wondering what the deal is with private plates in Canada (Ontario if the rules are different per province). I know that there is not the same rules around letters and number combo's and also I believe plates always stay with the owners when you change cars even if they aren't private?
Just generally wondering how do plates work over there? Are private plates expensive? What are the limits on what you can have etc??
Ails

Here in NS I pay $129.28 per year. All registration plates are owned by the Department of Motor Vehicles and you 'rent' them yearly.

There are restrictions but you go in to the Department of Motor Vehicles with your choice, they tap it into the computer and if it's available you purchase it for a year. Every year thereafter, you can renew it or change it :)

You may have a personalized plate in Ontario provided it meets the requirements.

My plate is S0C7. It was a present but iirc it was $50 on top of the registration fee. You can have up to 7 characters and no obscenities the DMV can spot.

Doesn't appear to be a requirement on that link to be a douche like there is in the UK.

My plate cost $105 no yearly renewal and transferable if I bought a different vehicle.

The way I'm reading it you can only buy them direct from the provincial government vehicles dept (equiv of dvla). Does that mean the prices stay sensible and they don't charge silly money for "good" plates like they do in the UK?

There's no market for plates, you can't sell them. You can only request an unused combination of letters, numbers and symbols from the plate issuer.

Can never understand paying for vanity plates. You get bugger all for it and most of the time nobody else understands or cares what it means.

I saw this the other day on Facebook. . . too funny. Nobody would think that "AGINA" is a bad. . . not thinking that the personalized university logo is the letter "V".

Hahaha!

There's a well-to-do looking man who drives around here in a Rolls sporting the vanity plate "NO WIFEE". I bet he gets a lot for it. And often.

I find it useful when being pulled over by the police as its easy to remember as opposed to some random numbers and letters given to you by the licencing office. Some keep others guessing when behind you as to what is the meaning behind the plate. Other than that you are correct but mine was bought for me so it wasnt my money being shelled out for it or me being vain.

It's considered to be very tacky over here and will only bestow Canadian pikey status.

The price I quoted includes your annual 'road tax' (sticker) fee which is approx $80.

then I am a pikey cos I have my grandchildrens names on my plate. They think it is wonderful and it shows them I remember then every day even though I'm thousands of miles away. I just walked into SGI told them what I wanted. It cost me $80 that was with the transfer from my other number.

Wouldn't it show that you love them more if you lived near them rather than just having vanity plates? My nan moved near me when I was seven and it was the best thing ever.

I remember seeing 3825 OFF (basically f**k off) on a BMW X5. (stereo)typical BMW type attitude.

At least if you did want a personal plate here you could probably do it without having to mess about with using numbers instead of letters, or placing letters / numbers near screw holes to make them try and read something.

No, I'm not that old yet, although after too many cans of Stella it can be problematic.

:) Stella? I was reading the MBM Gruanida blog on one of todays footie games (I forget the result) but the hack coined a lovely word referring to lagers like Stella or Heinecken, "Ubiquibrews". I liked that.

Slightly off topic, WTF does a plate mean when it shows a Maple Leafs logo and it has i.e 19to66 on it?

Been puzzling me for a while.

Makes RXED on mine. Perhaps if you have a German phone...

The odd 2 alpha 2 numeric 2 alpha combinations on plates seem to go with choosing a logo, Leafs or Square Dance Society or whatever. I suppose seven characters don't fit once there's the little picture.
