Wonder if anyone can help. PR card needs renewing. Dowloaded all the forms, found all documents bar one. They want to see my old expired passport. I no longer have it. Has anyone been in the same boat? What did you do?
Any suggestions?

Doesn't it only want an old one if you don't have a current one?
a copy of:
your valid passport or travel document, or
a copy of the passport or travel document you held at the time you became a permanent resident

It asks for copies of any passport you have held for the past 5 years.
"Photocopies of all pages of all passports you held in the past five (5) years"
I've no idea how you would get around this, you would need to check the box allowing a travel report (exit/entry) from CBSA; I suppose theoretically you could just provide everything they request other than that (with a letter of explanation) and give it a try. Hopefully someone else will know the answer!
Note to self, no need to keep passports dating back to 1979.

This is because a PR application looks at the 5 years immediately proceeding the date of the application unless you haven't been a PR for 5 years by the time you apply in which case CIC assess that you still can meet the RO since the date you became a PR.

Not all countries give you your expired passport back. When I renewed my Portuguese passport I had to turn in the old one and they gave me the new one. Surely there must be some way around it for countries that don't return the old one.

Take a complete copy of your old passport before you renew it.
CIC want to see you've met the RO so I would concentrate on trying to prove this.
For example, I do have my passports but I've just applied for my entry/ exit records from the UK etc to support my travel history.

I always hang on to mine. Thankfully both the Maltese and Canadian governments do return them to you if you want. I am miffed though that my parents never kept any of my expired passports that had some pretty cool stamps in them, Malta pre-EU/pre-Schengen, Dominican, some US etc. Now that I have all my stuff I keep the expired ones.

We have kept all our expired Canadian passports plus the last English one ........... we never renewed so did not return the expired one.
I am just about to hand my daughter's expired passports over to her, including her very first one bearing a photo taken when she was just under 1 year old and which was valid (and used) until she was 6

My second passport is back in the UK in a box of photos.
my third expired passport, I brought out here last October to enable me to look at the stamps to do my travel history for PR. This is my favourite one as it has loads of stamps and my visas stickers.
